Chapter 4 - THE BROTHER IN THE SHADOWS

Adrian Voss was found in Boston.
He did not live like the hidden heir to a multibillion-dollar empire.
He lived above a small architectural studio.
He drove an eight-year-old truck.
He owned no luxury properties.
He had no private security.
And according to Marcus, he had spent most of his adult life deliberately avoiding attention.
Elena flew to Boston the following morning.
She did not bring lawyers.
Only Marcus accompanied her.
Adrian’s office occupied the second floor of an old brick building.
Elena climbed the stairs.
Before she could knock, the door opened.
A tall man in a dark blue shirt stood there.
He looked at Elena.
Then at Marcus.
Then back at Elena.
“You found Monarch.”
Elena said nothing.
Adrian stepped aside.
“I wondered how long it would take.”
Elena entered.
Architectural drawings covered the walls.
No photographs of Alexander Voss were visible.
Elena remained standing.
“You knew about me.”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“My entire life.”
“And you never contacted me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Adrian studied her.
“Because your father asked me not to.”
“Our father.”
Adrian’s expression tightened.
“That depends on how generously you define the word.”
Elena sat across from him.
“Explain Monarch.”
Adrian looked toward Marcus.
“He stays.”
Adrian nodded.
“Monarch was your father’s insurance policy.”
“Against what?”
“Your board.”
Elena frowned.
“My board didn’t exist then.”
“The people who became your board did.”
Adrian walked toward a cabinet.
He removed an old envelope.
“Your father believed someone inside Voss Global was manipulating acquisitions.”
“Who?”
“He never discovered the full network.”
Adrian placed the envelope in front of Elena.
“He created Monarch so control could be transferred outside normal corporate channels if something happened to him.”
“To you?”
“To either of us.”
Elena looked up sharply.
“Either?”
Adrian nodded.
“You were always the primary heir.”
“Then why hide you?”
“Because nobody can target an heir they don’t know exists.”
Elena opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Her father’s handwriting.
She recognized it immediately.
Elena, if you are reading this, something has gone wrong.
Her throat tightened.
She continued.
Trust evidence, not titles.
Trust actions, not family names.
And if Monarch has been activated, find Adrian before they do.
Elena slowly looked up.
“Activated?”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What?”
“My father wrote ‘if Monarch has been activated.’”
Adrian took the letter.
His eyes moved quickly across the page.
“That isn’t possible.”
“Why?”
“Because activation requires two Voss signatures.”
Elena felt the pieces beginning to connect.
“My signature and yours?”
“Yes.”
“I never signed anything.”
“Neither did I.”
Marcus’s phone vibrated.
He answered.
His expression hardened.
“Elena.”
“What?”
“Someone attempted to access the Legacy Trust twelve minutes ago.”
“Using whose authorization?”
Marcus looked from Elena to Adrian.
“Yours.”
Elena stood.
“I didn’t authorize anything.”
“I know.”
Marcus continued.
“There was a second authorization.”
Adrian already knew.
“Mine.”
Marcus nodded.
Silence filled the room.
Someone had both signatures.
Someone had been preparing for this long before Elena humiliated Damian.
Adrian looked toward the window.
“We need to leave.”
Elena frowned.
“Why?”
A black SUV stopped across the street.
Then another.
May you like
Adrian’s expression turned cold.
“Because they found me first.”
