Chapter 8: The Father in the Photograph

Adrian ended the call before the police could trace it.
Vanessa stood frozen beside the lake.
“My father is alive.”
Nathan watched her closely.
“You believe him?”
“The necklace. The blood.”
“Adrian lies.”
“Not about this.”
Her certainty surprised everyone.
Detective Bennett approached her.
“Why would he keep your father alive for fifteen years?”
Vanessa wiped tears from her face.
“Because Dad knew where Adrian’s first stolen money went.”
Ethan frowned.
“How much money?”
“Millions.”
Nathan stared at her.
“You said your father owned a small business.”
“That was another lie.”
Vanessa’s voice was hollow now.
“Our father managed private investments for wealthy clients. Adrian accessed the accounts and transferred money into foreign trusts. Dad discovered it before the final transfer cleared.”
“So Adrian made him disappear.”
“Yes.”
“But why keep him alive?”
“Because Dad encrypted the account records. Adrian could move the money, but he couldn’t safely withdraw it without the authorization codes.”
Detective Bennett asked, “You believe he has tortured your father for fifteen years to obtain those codes?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I believe Adrian is capable of anything.”
An investigator approached with a dusty picture frame recovered from the hidden room.
Inside was an old family photograph.
A teenage Vanessa stood between two men.
One was Adrian.
The other was older, with tired eyes and one arm around his daughter.
Her father.
Nathan examined the picture.
Something about the man looked familiar.
Ethan noticed too.
“Wait.”
He took the photograph.
“I’ve seen him.”
Vanessa looked at him sharply.
“Where?”
Ethan stared at the image, searching his memory.
“Outside Nathan’s office.”
“When?”
“About a month ago. An older maintenance worker dropped a box in the lobby. I helped him pick it up.”
Nathan frowned.
“We don’t employ maintenance workers directly.”
“He had a contractor badge.”
Vanessa grabbed the photograph.
“Was it him?”
“He was older. Thinner. He had a scar near his left temple.”
Vanessa’s hand flew to her mouth.
“My father has that scar.”
Detective Bennett immediately contacted Nathan’s building security.
Within an hour, they had the lobby footage.
The man in the video wore gray overalls and moved with a limp.
Vanessa began crying when his face turned toward the camera.
“That’s him.”
Nathan stared at the screen.
The man had entered his building carrying a maintenance box.
He stayed for seventeen minutes.
“What was he doing there?” Nathan asked.
The security team tracked his movements.
He entered the executive floor.
He stopped outside Nathan’s office.
Then he walked directly beneath a camera and looked up.
For three full seconds, he stared into the lens.
Afterward, he left the building without entering any room.
Ethan watched the footage again.
“He wanted to be seen.”
Detective Bennett nodded.
“He was sending a message.”
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Can you enlarge the box?”
The image was enhanced.
There was handwriting on one side.
Three words.
CHECK THE CRADLE ACCOUNT.
Nathan froze.
“The Cradle Fund.”
“What is that?” the detective asked.
“A charitable account my company created for children in long-term hospital care.”
Vanessa turned pale.
“How much money is in it?”
“About twelve million dollars.”
Ethan understood first.
“Adrian doesn’t want the merger money.”
Nathan looked at him.
“He wants the charity fund.”
Detective Bennett asked, “Who can authorize a transfer?”
“Me and one independent trustee.”
“Who is the trustee?”
Nathan hesitated.
“My mother.”
Every head turned toward Margaret, who had just arrived in a police car.
She stepped out slowly.
Before anyone could speak, her phone rang.
Margaret answered.
Her face went white.
A man’s voice spoke loudly enough for Nathan to hear.
“Hello, Mrs. Hale. I believe you and I need to discuss your son’s charity.”
Then Margaret screamed.
A van raced from behind the trees.
Two masked men jumped out.
Before the officers could react, they grabbed Margaret and pulled her inside.
Nathan ran toward them.
The van accelerated, striking him with the open door and throwing him onto the road.
As the vehicle disappeared, Margaret’s phone lay shattered near his hand.
On the broken screen was a message from Adrian.
