Chapter 5: The Hospital Record

The police arrived twelve minutes later.

By then, Adrian’s car was gone.

No one had seen the license plate.

The bullet recovered from the wall came from an unregistered handgun.

Vanessa gave a statement but left out nearly everything.

When Detective Laura Bennett asked why someone might shoot at the house, Vanessa claimed she did not know.

Nathan waited until the detective stepped away.

“You need to tell her.”

“No.”

“He tried to kill us.”

“He was warning me.”

Nathan stared at her.

“That makes it worse.”

“If I give them his name and they fail to arrest him, he’ll come back.”

Ethan joined them.

“He is coming back anyway.”

Vanessa looked between the brothers.

“You don’t know him.”

Ethan’s voice was calm.

“No. But I know men who use fear to control people. They do not stop because their victims cooperate.”

Detective Bennett returned.

“I need to speak with Mrs. Hale privately.”

Vanessa stiffened.

Nathan and Ethan exchanged a glance.

“What is this about?” Nathan asked.

The detective’s expression was unreadable.

“We received information while processing the scene.”

“What information?”

Detective Bennett looked at Vanessa.

“Mrs. Hale, have you ever been treated at St. Joseph’s Medical Center under the name Vanessa Cole?”

Vanessa’s face went white.

Nathan noticed immediately.

“What happened at St. Joseph’s?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Detective Bennett continued.

“Seven years ago, a Vanessa Cole was admitted after a serious car accident. Her records indicate emergency surgery.”

Nathan’s confusion deepened.

“What does that have to do with tonight?”

The detective hesitated.

Vanessa stood.

“You have no right to discuss my medical history.”

“I’m not asking about the details of your treatment. I’m asking whether you are the same person.”

Vanessa looked toward the broken window.

Finally, she nodded.

Nathan felt a strange pressure building in his chest.

“What surgery?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Detective Bennett answered carefully.

“The hospital record notes a hysterectomy.”

Nathan stared at his wife.

The room seemed to tilt around him.

A hysterectomy.

She had known from the beginning that she could never become pregnant.

Every test.

Every ultrasound.

Every imagined heartbeat.

All of it had been planned with full knowledge.

Nathan stepped backward.

“You didn’t just fake the pregnancy after you became desperate.”

Vanessa looked at him, tears forming.

“Nathan—”

“You knew before we got married.”

“Yes.”

“Did you ever plan to tell me?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

She opened her mouth but could not answer.

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“You listened to me talk about wanting children.”

“I was afraid you wouldn’t marry me.”

“You took that choice away from me.”

“I loved you.”

“That is not love.”

His voice was not loud.

That made it worse.

“You let me believe we were trying for a baby for two years.”

Vanessa’s tears fell.

“I kept hoping I could find another way.”

“Adoption? Surrogacy? We could have discussed any of it.”

“You would have asked questions about my medical records. About my past. About Adrian.”

Nathan looked at her with a kind of devastation deeper than anger.

“So our entire marriage began with a lie.”

Before Vanessa could answer, Detective Bennett’s phone rang.

She stepped away.

Seconds later, her expression changed.

“What is it?” Ethan asked.

The detective ended the call.

“A man matching Adrian Cole’s description was found inside a burned vehicle outside the city.”

Vanessa stopped crying.

Nathan studied her.

She did not look relieved.

She looked horrified.

Detective Bennett continued.

“The body is badly burned, but identification was found in the car.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

“You don’t believe it’s him?” Ethan asked.

Vanessa turned toward him.

“Adrian never carries identification.”

A chill passed through the room.

“Then who is in that car?” Nathan asked.

May you like

Vanessa’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“Someone Adrian wanted you to think was dead.”
