Chapter 14: The Child Vanessa Left Behind

Three weeks before Vanessa’s sentencing, Nathan received a letter.

It came from a woman named Rachel Pierce.

She claimed to have known Vanessa eight years earlier.

Nathan almost threw it away.

Then he read the final line.

Vanessa did not lie when she said she once tried to become a mother.

Nathan contacted Rachel.

They met in a quiet café.

Rachel was a social worker.

She placed a folder on the table.

“Vanessa came to our agency seven years ago.”

“For adoption?”

“Yes.”

Nathan stared at her.

“She told me she had never considered it.”

“She did more than consider it.”

Rachel opened the folder.

Vanessa and Adrian had once shared responsibility for a six-year-old girl named Lily.

Lily was their half sister.

Their father had another child shortly before disappearing.

When Lily’s mother died, Vanessa became her temporary guardian.

Nathan looked at the photograph.

Lily had dark hair and Vanessa’s eyes.

“What happened to her?”

“Vanessa tried to adopt her.”

Nathan felt a painful pressure in his chest.

“Did she?”

“No. Adrian interfered.”

Rachel explained that Adrian had used Vanessa’s criminal associations and unstable finances against her. He then manipulated the court process until Lily was placed in foster care.

“Vanessa disappeared shortly afterward,” Rachel said. “Lily was adopted by another family.”

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Because Vanessa contacted me before her arrest. She asked me to make sure Lily was safe if anything happened to her.”

Nathan studied the photograph.

This did not excuse anything Vanessa had done.

But it explained the terror beneath her obsession with motherhood.

She had not simply invented a baby to control him.

She had built an illusion around the child she believed she could never have and the sister she had failed to protect.

“Does Lily know about Vanessa?”

“Her adoptive parents know the history. Lily is fourteen now. She has a good life.”

Nathan closed the folder.

“Vanessa should hear that.”

Rachel looked surprised.

“I thought you hated her.”

“I don’t know what I feel.”

Nathan visited Vanessa in jail the following day.

She looked smaller in the gray uniform.

There was no expensive dress.

No carefully arranged hair.

No fake belly to hide behind.

He placed Lily’s photograph against the glass.

Vanessa’s face crumpled.

“Where did you get that?”

“Rachel Pierce.”

Vanessa touched the glass with trembling fingers.

“Is Lily safe?”

“Yes.”

She began crying.

Nathan watched her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because every time I looked at you, I saw the family I wanted. And every time I thought about Lily, I remembered what happened when I failed.”

“You could have trusted me.”

“I didn’t know how.”

“That was always your problem.”

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.”

Nathan told her Lily had been adopted by kind parents and was doing well in school.

Vanessa smiled through tears.

It was the first genuine smile he had seen from her in months.

“She loves drawing,” Nathan said.

“She always did.”

“You remember?”

“I remember everything.”

Nathan hesitated.

“Your past explains you. It does not excuse you.”

“I understand.”

“I came because you deserved to know she was safe.”

“Why?”

Nathan looked at her.

“Because I refuse to become cruel just because you hurt me.”

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

Nathan stood to leave.

“Nathan?”

He paused.

“When you become a father someday,” she said, “you’ll be a good one.”

The words struck him harder than he expected.

He left without answering.

But for the first time since the fake pregnancy was exposed, the thought of fatherhood did not feel like an open wound.

It felt like something that might still be waiting for him.
