Chapter 10: Nathan’s Inheritance

The police heard every word.
So did Nathan.
Adrian struck Vanessa’s father across the face.
“What did you say?”
The old man coughed, blood appearing at the corner of his mouth.
“You spent fifteen years searching for codes because you never understood the account.”
Adrian raised the gun.
Vanessa stepped between them.
“Stop.”
Her father continued.
“The money was never in a private trust. It was transferred into a legal custodial structure.”
Nathan stared at the audio controls.
“What does that mean?” he asked.
Ethan looked equally confused.
Inside the factory, Adrian grabbed the old man’s collar.
“Who is the beneficiary?”
Vanessa’s father looked toward his daughter.
“Tell him.”
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“Yes, you do.”
The old man’s gaze softened.
“Think about the name I gave the account.”
Vanessa whispered, “Cradle.”
“Not Nathan’s charity. The original account.”
Her eyes widened.
“Nathan.”
Adrian turned toward her.
“What about Nathan?”
Vanessa looked stunned.
“My father knew Nathan’s father.”
Nathan felt the air leave his lungs.
His father, Robert Hale, had died when Nathan was twelve.
Margaret had always said it was a heart attack.
Inside the factory, Vanessa’s father spoke through broken breaths.
“Robert helped me hide the stolen funds before Adrian could access them. He created a custodial trust under his son’s name.”
Adrian stared at him.
“You put my money in Nathan Hale’s name?”
“It was never your money.”
Nathan looked at Margaret through the grainy surveillance feed.
Even tied to the chair, she appeared shocked.
Or perhaps not shocked enough.
Ethan noticed.
“Mom knows something.”
Nathan watched her face.
“What did Dad do?”
Detective Bennett quickly contacted a federal financial specialist.
Records were searched.
Within minutes, they found an old trust connected to Robert Hale.
The current value was forty-three million dollars.
Nathan sat down.
Forty-three million.
Money stolen from Vanessa’s father’s clients and hidden until it could be returned.
The trust had remained dormant because no one had provided the necessary evidence to release it.
Adrian had spent fifteen years searching for access.
Vanessa’s father had spent fifteen years protecting Nathan because Nathan was unknowingly the only person who could legally unlock the funds.
Inside the factory, Adrian pressed the gun against the old man’s head.
“You’re going to tell me how he opens it.”
Vanessa’s father laughed.
“He can’t.”
Adrian’s face twisted.
“What?”
“The trust requires Nathan, Margaret and me to authorize the release together.”
Margaret lifted her head.
Nathan stared at the screen.
His mother knew.
She had always known.
Adrian looked at Margaret.
“You.”
Margaret said nothing.
“You knew where he was?”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I knew he was alive.”
Nathan stood slowly.
The betrayal hit differently from Vanessa’s.
His own mother had hidden this for years.
Adrian turned back to Vanessa.
“Your husband’s family has been lying to you longer than you lied to them.”
Vanessa looked toward Margaret.
“Is that true?”
Margaret whispered, “We were protecting Nathan.”
Adrian smiled.
“Everyone lies when they call it protection.”
Then he grabbed Vanessa and pressed the gun beneath her chin.
“Tell the police outside that Nathan comes in alone.”
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
Adrian looked toward the nearest dark window.
“I know they’re listening.”
He fired a bullet into the ceiling.
“Five minutes,” he shouted. “Or the wife dies first.”
In the command van, every officer began speaking at once.
Nathan ignored them.
He removed his protective vest.
Ethan blocked the door.
“You are not going in there.”
Nathan looked at the screen where Vanessa stood with a gun against her throat.
“She destroyed my life.”
“Exactly.”
Nathan’s eyes hardened.
“But I won’t let Adrian take another life because of me.”
May you like
He stepped past his brother.
“And I need my mother to tell me why my father really died.”
