Chapter 11: The Truth About Robert Hale

Nathan entered the factory with his hands raised.

Adrian waited beneath a broken overhead light.

Vanessa stood beside him.

Margaret and Vanessa’s father remained tied to their chairs.

“Here he is,” Adrian said. “The richest man in the room who didn’t know he was rich.”

Nathan looked at his mother.

“What happened to Dad?”

Margaret began to cry.

“Nathan, this isn’t the time.”

“It is the only time.”

Adrian laughed.

“I like him.”

He gestured with the gun.

“Tell your son.”

Margaret looked at Nathan.

“Your father did not die from a heart attack.”

Nathan had expected the answer.

It still broke something inside him.

“How did he die?”

“He was poisoned.”

Vanessa looked at Adrian.

Her brother smiled.

Margaret continued.

“Robert helped Samuel Cole hide the stolen funds. Adrian discovered his involvement. A week later, your father collapsed.”

Nathan’s gaze moved to Adrian.

“You killed him.”

“I was twenty-two,” Adrian replied. “I made an impulsive decision.”

Vanessa stared at her brother in horror.

“You told me Robert died naturally.”

“You believed many things.”

Nathan stepped toward him.

Adrian raised the gun.

“Careful.”

Nathan stopped.

Margaret spoke quickly.

“Robert made me promise not to reveal the trust until Samuel was safe. But Samuel disappeared. I believed Adrian had killed him too.”

“So you did nothing for fifteen years?”

“I protected you.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

His whole life seemed built by people deciding what truths he could handle.

Vanessa had lied.

Margaret had lied.

His father had left secrets behind.

Even Ethan had investigated Vanessa without telling him.

Nathan opened his eyes.

“No more secrets.”

He looked at Samuel.

“How do we release the trust?”

Samuel lifted his head.

“All three trustees must approve an independent audit. Then the funds are returned to the original victims or their families.”

Adrian pressed the gun harder against Vanessa.

“Or the trustees can redirect the account.”

Samuel shook his head.

“No. Robert made that impossible.”

Adrian’s calm finally cracked.

“Then why have I kept you alive?”

“Because you were too arrogant to accept that you had lost.”

Adrian struck him again.

Vanessa screamed.

Nathan took another step.

Adrian swung the gun toward him.

“Do you love her?”

Nathan looked at Vanessa.

She had faked their child.

Stolen his money.

Manipulated his grief.

But she was also standing in front of a man who had controlled her since she was eighteen.

“I don’t know who she is,” Nathan said honestly.

Vanessa flinched.

Adrian smiled.

“Then this should be easy.”

He pushed Vanessa to her knees and aimed at her head.

“Authorize the charity transfer.”

Nathan looked at Margaret.

Then at Samuel.

Then at Vanessa.

“No.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Adrian’s finger tightened on the trigger.

A gunshot exploded through the factory.

Vanessa fell.

Nathan lunged forward.

But Adrian was the one who staggered.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

Ethan stood on the metal walkway above them, holding a police officer’s backup weapon.

Adrian fired upward.

Ethan ducked.

Officers stormed the factory from every entrance.

Chaos erupted.

Adrian grabbed Vanessa and dragged her toward a side door.

Nathan followed.

Outside, rain had begun falling.

Adrian pulled Vanessa toward the river behind the factory.

She fought him.

He struck her and raised the gun again.

Nathan tackled him.

The three of them crashed onto the wet concrete.

The gun slid toward the river.

Vanessa reached it first.

She stood with both hands wrapped around the weapon.

Adrian rose slowly.

“Give it to me.”

Vanessa aimed at her brother.

For the first time in her life, he looked uncertain.

“You won’t shoot me,” he said.

Vanessa’s hands shook.

Nathan remained on the ground between them.

“Vanessa,” he said quietly. “Put it down.”

Adrian smiled.

“You see? Your husband still thinks you’re weak.”

Vanessa stared at the man who had destroyed her father, killed Nathan’s father and turned her life into a weapon.

Then she lowered the gun.

Adrian lunged for it.

Vanessa stepped aside.

He slipped on the rain-soaked concrete and crashed through the broken railing.

His hand caught the edge.

For one second, he hung above the dark river.

“Help me!” he shouted.

Vanessa looked down at him.

Nathan expected her to walk away.

Instead, she dropped to her knees and grabbed his wrist.

Adrian stared at her in disbelief.

“Pull me up.”

Police officers rushed toward them.

Vanessa held on until they seized him.

As Adrian was dragged to safety and handcuffed, Vanessa began sobbing.

Nathan understood why.

She had saved the brother who would never have saved her.

And in doing so, she had finally proven she was not him.
