Chapter 1: The Man No One Dared Forget

The lobby fell into complete silence.
Briggs frowned.
He could feel it.
Something had changed.
Not because of him.
Because of the man standing at the entrance.
The stranger walked forward with slow, measured steps.
His polished boots echoed across the marble floor.
Click.
Click.
Click.
No one spoke.
No one even breathed too loudly.
The veterans lining the lobby instinctively straightened their backs.
Old habits.
Old respect.
One gray-haired man quietly whispered,
"My God..."
"It's General Nathan Caldwell."
The words spread through the room like wildfire.
Even employees who had never served in the military recognized the name.
Nathan Caldwell.
America's most decorated retired four-star general.
The man who had commanded rescue operations across three wars.
The man presidents called when the nation faced impossible decisions.
Briggs laughed.
"A general?"
"So what?"
"He's retired."
Nathan stopped five feet away.
His icy blue eyes settled on Briggs' hand gripping Evelyn's wrist.
"I'll ask once."
His voice wasn't loud.
It didn't need to be.
"Release her."
Briggs smirked.
"Or what?"
Nathan didn't answer.
Instead...
he slowly removed one black leather glove.
Behind him...
three black SUVs pulled up outside the building.
The lobby doors opened.
Six men in dark suits entered without saying a word.
Not bodyguards.
May you like
Federal protective agents.
Every face in the lobby turned white.
