Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT ON THE LAKE

Nathan had spent twenty-seven years believing his mother drowned.

Her name was Rebecca Cole.

No body had ever been recovered.

Charles told Nathan the lake took her.

The truth was uglier.

Rebecca had discovered the Sterling–Cole operation before Charles wanted out.

She threatened to expose both families.

Richard sabotaged the boat.

Charles knew.

And did nothing.

Nathan watched his father's confession without moving.

Grace sat beside him.

Charles said Rebecca survived the initial explosion.

Richard found her in the water.

What happened afterward was unknown.

Daniel Bennett discovered evidence years later suggesting Rebecca may have survived.

That discovery was why Richard killed him.

Nathan whispered, “She could've lived.”

Grace took his hand.

Nathan didn't pull away.

Michael searched the archive.

They found a hospital record.

A Jane Doe admitted the night of the boating accident.

Female.

Thirty-four.

Severe burns.

Transferred forty-eight hours later.

Destination unknown.

Nathan stared at it.

“My mother survived.”

Grace whispered, “Maybe.”

That word mattered.

Maybe.

No miracle.

No convenient resurrection.

Only a possibility.

Nathan refused to chase it yet.

Lily came first.

The archive release remained scheduled.

Then Grace received a video.

Evelyn.

Her mother was standing outside her own house.

Richard appeared behind her.

Grace screamed.

The video ended.

Her phone rang.

Richard spoke.

“You release the archive, Evelyn dies.”

Grace's hands shook.

Nathan took the phone.

“You want me?”

Richard laughed.

“I want the codes.”

“You don't need Lily.”

“No.”

Richard paused.

“But children make parents cooperative.”

Nathan's face changed.

“Where?”

“Your father's lake house.”

“Midnight.”

“No police.”

The call ended.

Grace looked at Nathan.

“We give him the codes.”

Nathan shook his head.

“We give him something.”

“But not the truth.”

Michael created a fake archive.

It looked identical.

If Richard opened it, the system would appear to erase the evidence.

In reality, opening it would trigger immediate public release.

Grace stared at the computer.

“So if he thinks he wins…”

“He loses.”

Nathan nodded.

They went to the lake house.

Exactly where Rebecca Cole had supposedly died.

Richard waited.

Evelyn sat tied to a chair.

Three armed men surrounded her.

Richard smiled.

“History loves this place.”

Nathan stared at him.

“You killed my mother here.”

Richard's smile faded.

“So Charles finally told you.”

“Did she survive?”

Richard laughed.

“Wouldn't you like to know?”

Nathan stepped forward.

Grace caught his arm.

Richard looked at her.

“You have your father's eyes.”

Grace stared back.

“And you have his blood on your hands.”

Richard held out a laptop.

“Codes.”

Grace entered hers.

Nathan entered his.

The fake archive opened.

Richard smiled.

“Delete.”

Nathan clicked.

The screen displayed:

ARCHIVE DESTROYED.

Richard relaxed.

Then every phone in the room began buzzing.

News alerts.

Files had been released simultaneously to prosecutors, newspapers, and federal agencies.

Richard stared at Nathan.

“What did you do?”

Nathan smiled.

“What my father should've done twenty years ago.”

Richard raised his gun.

Grace screamed.

May you like

A shot exploded.

And Evelyn fell.
