Chapter 2 - THE PERFECT EVIDENCE

The police had everything.

Bank records.

Plane tickets.

Witness statements.

Security photographs.

A fake passport carrying Grace's picture.

Every piece of evidence pointed in one direction.

Grace Bennett had kidnapped Lily and planned to flee the country.

There was only one problem.

None of it was real.

Nathan stood between Grace and three police officers.

“You're not taking that child.”

The senior officer, Detective Marcus Reed, remained calm.

“Mr. Cole, we have a court order.”

“I'm Lily's father.”

Victoria laughed softly behind him.

“You think.”

Nathan turned.

“Get out.”

Victoria stared at him.

“What?”

“Get out of my house.”

“Nathan.”

“Now.”

“You're throwing away everything because this woman walked back into your life?”

“No.”

Nathan looked at Lily.

“I'm throwing you out because I watched you raise a hockey stick over a five-year-old child.”

Victoria's face tightened.

“You'll regret this.”

Nathan removed the engagement ring from her finger.

Victoria gasped.

He placed it on the counter.

“I already regret enough.”

She left.

But before the door closed, Grace heard her whisper.

“You should've stayed dead.”

Grace shivered.

Nathan immediately called his longtime attorney, Michael Reyes.

Michael arrived twenty minutes later.

By midnight, he had obtained an emergency hearing delaying Lily's removal until paternity could be established.

Nathan agreed to an immediate DNA test.

Grace didn't object.

She simply said, “Do it.”

The result arrived the next morning.

Probability of paternity: 99.99%.

Nathan sat alone with the paper.

Five years.

The number kept hitting him.

Five birthdays.

Five Christmas mornings.

First steps.

First words.

The first day of preschool.

Five years of a life that should have included him.

Lily appeared in the doorway.

“Mommy said you're sad.”

Nathan quickly wiped his face.

“I'm okay.”

She walked closer.

“Are you really my daddy?”

Nathan looked at her.

“Yes.”

Lily studied him carefully.

Then she touched the dimple beside his mouth.

“I have that.”

Nathan laughed through his tears.

“Yeah.”

“You do.”

“Mommy said I got it from you.”

Nathan looked toward the hallway.

Grace was standing there.

Their eyes met.

Lily whispered, “Are you mad at Mommy?”

Nathan swallowed.

Part of him was.

A wounded part.

A selfish part.

But then he remembered the terror on Grace's face.

“No.”

He took Lily's tiny hand.

“I'm mad at the people who made her afraid.”

Grace looked away.

Michael entered.

“Nathan.”

His tone changed the room.

“What?”

“I need to show you something.”

He placed a sealed envelope on the table.

Nathan recognized the handwriting.

His father.

Charles Cole had died eight months earlier.

“Where did you get this?”

“Your father's private safe.”

Michael looked at Grace.

“He gave me instructions before he died.”

“What instructions?”

“If Grace Bennett ever came back, I was supposed to give you this.”

Nathan stared at him.

“My father knew she might return?”

Michael nodded.

Nathan reached for the envelope.

Michael stopped him.

“There's something written on the back.”

Nathan turned it over.

Four words.

I KNEW ABOUT LILY.

Nathan's hand began shaking.

Grace closed her eyes.

Nathan opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

And a small black flash drive.

He began reading.

Nathan,

If Grace has returned, then the lie I built has finally collapsed.

Nathan's jaw tightened.

She did not abandon you.

His breathing stopped.

Grace watched him.

Nathan continued.

I forced her to leave.

He lowered the letter.

The room became completely silent.

Grace whispered, “Keep reading.”

Nathan did.

His father admitted threatening Grace.

He admitted using her family's debts.

He admitted promising to take Lily away if Grace ever contacted Nathan.

But then Charles wrote something Nathan did not expect.

I did these things because I was a coward.

Eleanor Sterling gave me a choice.

Grace disappears, or you die.

Nathan looked up.

“Eleanor?”

Grace whispered, “Victoria's mother.”

The letter continued.

Charles had spent years laundering illegal payments through Cole Industries for the Sterling family.

When he tried to leave the arrangement, Eleanor threatened Nathan.

Then Grace became pregnant.

A biological Cole heir would change the voting structure of the Cole Family Trust.

If Nathan married Victoria and had a child with her, the Sterlings would eventually gain influence over the company.

But Lily destroyed that plan before she was even born.

Nathan whispered, “This was never about Grace.”

Michael shook his head.

“It was about control of Cole Industries.”

Grace looked at Lily.

“And my daughter was in the way.”

Nathan reached the final paragraph.

His father's handwriting became shaky.

I spent five years trying to undo what I did.

I failed.

If Eleanor learns Grace has returned, she will create a crime around her.

Nathan looked at the fabricated kidnapping evidence.

Charles had predicted it.

Then he read the last line.

Do not trust the evidence.

Trust the child.

Lily frowned.

“Me?”

Nathan looked at her.

“Yes.”

Then Lily said something strange.

“Grandpa Charlie told me that too.”

Nathan froze.

Grace turned.

“What?”

Lily looked confused by their reaction.

“He said if Mommy ever got scared, I should give you this.”

She reached inside her backpack.

And pulled out a small brass key.

Grace stared.

“Where did you get that?”

“Grandpa Charlie.”

Nathan's voice barely worked.

“When?”

“Before he went to heaven.”

Grace's face went pale.

May you like

Charles Cole had secretly found them before he died.

And whatever he had given Lily was something he hadn't trusted to anyone else.
