Chapter 13 - DANIEL’S LETTER

Michael found the letter in an evidence box.

Daniel Bennett had written it the night before he died.

Grace recognized her father's handwriting immediately.

Her knees weakened.

Nathan sat beside her.

Grace opened it.

My beautiful Grace,

If you're reading this, something happened before I could come home.

Grace stopped.

Tears blurred the words.

Nathan waited.

She continued.

Daniel wrote that he had discovered powerful people were stealing money and hurting anyone who threatened them.

But he didn't write about revenge.

He wrote about Grace.

About the first time she rode a bicycle.

About how she once brought home a wounded bird.

About how stubborn she had always been.

Then came the sentence that broke her.

If I fail, do not make my fight your whole life.

Grace covered her mouth.

Nathan wrapped an arm around her.

She kept reading.

Powerful people want you to believe justice and revenge are the same thing.

They aren't.

Justice protects tomorrow.

Revenge only keeps yesterday alive.

Grace cried openly.

Then she reached the final paragraph.

Someday you may have a family of your own.

If you do, choose them.

Choose ordinary mornings.

Choose laughter.

Choose the people who stay.

That will be a greater victory than anything I can accomplish tonight.

Grace pressed the letter against her chest.

Lily entered.

“Mommy?”

Grace opened her arms.

Lily climbed into them.

“Why are you sad?”

“My daddy wrote me something.”

“Grandpa Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

Grace looked at Nathan.

Then at her daughter.

“He told me to choose you.”

Lily smiled.

“That's easy.”

Grace laughed through her tears.

“Yes.”

“It is.”

Nathan looked away because he was crying too.

That evening, Grace placed Daniel's letter beside Charles's confession.

Two fathers.

Two choices.

Daniel had risked his life telling the truth.

Charles had spent decades hiding it.

Both loved their children.

Only one had understood that love without courage could become another kind of cage.

Nathan closed the box.

“I won't be my father.”

Grace looked at him.

“No.”

“You'll be Lily's father.”

May you like

Nathan smiled.

The difference meant everything.
