Chapter 7 - CHARLES’S FINAL INSURANCE

Charles had created a digital archive.
He had spent the final three years of his life secretly collecting evidence against the Sterlings and against himself.
Audio recordings.
Bank transfers.
Photographs.
Contracts.
Video.
Enough to destroy the entire network.
He placed legal ownership of the archive in a trust belonging to Lily.
Only two people could authorize its release.
Nathan.
And Grace.
Richard couldn't destroy the archive.
But he could stop them from unlocking it.
Grace looked at Nathan.
“He wants us dead.”
Michael shook his head.
“Not immediately.”
“He needs the access codes.”
Nathan looked toward Lily.
“Does she know anything?”
“No.”
Michael pointed to Charles's letter.
“The archive belongs to her legally.”
“But the encryption keys were divided between you and Grace.”
Grace almost laughed.
“Your father turned our daughter into a vault.”
Nathan looked sick.
“He thought he was protecting her.”
“He was wrong.”
“Yes.”
Nathan didn't defend Charles.
That mattered to Grace.
They decided to release the archive immediately.
No bargaining.
No secrets.
No leverage.
Everything would go to federal prosecutors and multiple news organizations simultaneously.
Michael scheduled the release.
Twenty-four hours.
Then the power went out.
Grace stood.
“Nathan?”
Glass shattered downstairs.
Nathan grabbed Lily.
“Bathroom.”
Grace took her daughter.
Nathan locked them inside.
Footsteps entered the house.
One man.
Then another.
Nathan waited beside the bedroom door.
A shadow appeared.
Nathan attacked.
They crashed into the hallway.
The intruder punched him.
Nathan hit back.
Another man came upstairs.
Grace opened the bathroom door and sprayed him directly in the eyes with cleaning chemicals.
He screamed.
She kicked the gun from his hand.
“Run!”
Grace grabbed Lily.
Nathan tackled the first attacker down the stairs.
Police sirens approached.
The men fled.
One dropped his phone.
Michael examined it.
A message was still open.
DO NOT KILL COLE OR BENNETT.
TAKE THE GIRL.
Grace stared at the screen.
“Why take Lily if she doesn't know the codes?”
Nathan looked at Charles's documents again.
Then he understood.
“The codes aren't numbers.”
Michael frowned.
“What?”
Nathan looked at Grace.
“They're questions.”
Charles had built the encryption around memories.
Questions only Nathan and Grace could answer.
Their first date.
The place Nathan proposed.
Grace's childhood nickname.
Things Charles had learned while watching them.
But the final question belonged to Lily.
Michael read it aloud.
WHAT DID CHARLES GIVE THE CHILD?
Everyone looked at Lily.
She hugged her rabbit.
Nathan knelt.
“Sweetheart.”
“Did Grandpa Charlie give you anything besides the key?”
Lily nodded.
Grace froze.
“What?”
“A letter.”
“Where is it?”
Lily looked frightened.
“Mommy told me never to hide things.”
“It's okay.”
Grace knelt.
“Where is it?”
Lily whispered.
“In Bunny.”
Grace looked at the stuffed rabbit.
She opened a seam along its back.
Inside was a tiny memory card.
Nathan stared at it.
Charles had trusted a five-year-old with the final key.
Michael inserted the card.
One video appeared.
Charles Cole sat behind his desk.
He looked sick.
Older than Nathan remembered.
Charles looked directly into the camera.
“If you're watching this, Lily survived.”
Nathan's eyes filled.
Charles continued.
“And if Lily survived, Grace did what I should have done years ago.”
“She chose her child over power.”
Nathan looked at Grace.
Then Charles said something that changed everything.
“Richard Sterling did not kill Daniel Bennett because of the ledger.”
Grace froze.
“He killed Daniel because Daniel discovered what happened to Nathan's mother.”
Nathan stared at the screen.
His mother had died when he was nine.
A boating accident.
Charles looked into the camera.
“Nathan.”
May you like
“Your mother's death was not an accident.”
“And Richard Sterling was there.”
