Chapter 11 - THE TRIAL

Six months later, Richard Sterling went on trial for Daniel Bennett's murder.

Grace testified.

Richard watched her from the defense table.

He expected fear.

She gave him none.

The prosecutor asked, “Why did you return to Chicago?”

Grace looked toward Nathan.

Then Lily.

“To stop running.”

“Did you return for Nathan Cole's money?”

“No.”

“His company?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

Grace looked directly at Richard.

“Because my daughter deserved to know her father.”

Richard's attorney attacked her credibility.

The fake kidnapping evidence.

Her false identity.

The years in hiding.

Grace answered everything.

“Yes, I used another name.”

“Yes, I ran.”

“Yes, I was afraid.”

Then she looked at the jury.

“But fear doesn't make a person guilty.”

“Sometimes fear means someone powerful worked very hard to make you afraid.”

The courtroom went silent.

Rebecca testified next.

Then Evelyn.

Then Victoria.

Finally the prosecution played Charles Cole's recordings.

A dead man's confession.

Nathan sat motionless.

He heard his father admit cowardice.

Fraud.

Blackmail.

Silence.

He heard Charles admit that Daniel Bennett was braver than he had been.

Then Charles's final statement played.

“If my son ever hears this, I hope he becomes a better man than I was.”

Nathan looked down.

Lily slipped her hand into his.

He squeezed it.

The jury deliberated for nine hours.

Guilty.

Richard closed his eyes.

Grace didn't smile.

Nothing about Daniel's death felt like victory.

But when the judge sentenced Richard to life without parole, Evelyn began crying.

Grace held her.

“It’s over.”

Evelyn whispered.

“No.”

She looked at Lily.

“Now something better begins.”

Eleanor's trial followed.

She was convicted on conspiracy, kidnapping, corruption, obstruction, and attempted murder charges.

She received forty-six years.

Victoria pleaded guilty to assault, conspiracy, obstruction, and evidence fabrication.

Her cooperation reduced her sentence to seven years.

Before sentencing, Victoria asked to address Grace.

Grace almost refused.

Then she agreed.

Victoria stood several feet away.

“I hated you because Nathan loved you without needing you to be anything.”

Grace said nothing.

“My whole life, love was something you earned by being useful.”

“I thought if you disappeared, I would win.”

Victoria's voice broke.

“But I didn't win.”

“I became the person I was most afraid of.”

Grace looked at her.

“Your mother?”

Victoria shook her head.

“Myself.”

Grace didn't forgive her.

Not that day.

Maybe never.

But she no longer feared her.

That was enough.

Outside the courthouse, hundreds of reporters waited.

Nathan took Grace's hand.

“You ready?”

“No.”

“Me neither.”

Lily grabbed both their hands.

“I am.”

Grace laughed.

“Of course you are.”

They walked outside together.

The cameras flashed.

Questions flew.

Nathan ignored all of them.

Then one reporter shouted.

“Mr. Cole, after losing your company and fortune, do you feel Richard Sterling destroyed your family?”

Nathan stopped.

He turned.

“No.”

The reporters fell quiet.

Nathan looked at Grace and Lily.

“He destroyed the family I was born into.”

“He didn't touch the one I chose.”

Grace's eyes filled.

May you like

Nathan walked away.

For the first time, he meant every word.
