Chapter 8: The Family We Choose

Two years later, Sophie stood on a small school stage receiving an award.

I watched from the audience.

This time…

Nobody ignored her.

Nobody questioned her.

Nobody judged her.

She was surrounded by people who loved her.

After the ceremony, she hugged me.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“Remember when everyone thought I was guilty?”

I smiled sadly.

“Yes.”

She looked at the crowd.

“I'm glad the truth won.”

I held her tightly.

Because that night at the wedding…

I lost a brother.

But I gained something more important.

A daughter who learned her worth.

A voice I refused to silence.

And the courage to walk away from people who only loved me when I was quiet.

Years later, people still talked about the Whitmore Hotel wedding.

Not because it was the night Preston Carter got married.

But because it was the night the golden son fell.
