Chapter 1: The Night Everyone Chose Him

The ambulance doors slammed shut before I could even say goodbye.

Sophie’s small hand was still wrapped around my fingers as the paramedics carried her away.

“Mommy…”

Her voice was weak.

“I didn’t steal anything.”

Those words followed me long after the ambulance disappeared into the night.

I stood outside the Whitmore Hotel ballroom, still wearing the dress I had chosen because I wanted my daughter to feel like she belonged among our wealthy relatives.

But my family had made one thing clear.

Sophie and I never belonged.

Not when Preston was around.

My brother had always been the favorite.

The perfect son.

The successful businessman.

The man who could walk into a room and everyone would immediately stand taller.

When we were children, my parents framed his awards.

My drawings were kept in a drawer.

When Preston broke a neighbor’s window, my father called it an accident.

When I got a scholarship instead of him, my mother said I was “lucky.”

Preston never learned consequences.

He only learned that people would protect him.

And tonight…

They protected him again.

I walked back into the ballroom.

The guests were still whispering.

Some looked embarrassed.

Others looked away.

But nobody apologized.

Nobody asked how Sophie was.

Then I saw my mother.

She was calmly drinking champagne.

As if nothing happened.

“You should not have embarrassed Preston on his wedding day,” she said.

I stared at her.

“My daughter was bleeding.”

She sighed.

“Because she was involved in something she shouldn’t have been.”

That was the moment something inside me finally broke.

Not because she blamed Sophie.

But because I realized she truly believed it.

Then my phone rang.

It was the hospital.

I answered immediately.

“Mrs. Carter?”

The nurse’s voice became serious.

“Your daughter keeps asking for you.”

I closed my eyes.

“I’m coming.”

As I walked away, I looked back at Preston.

He was surrounded by family and friends.

Smiling.

Safe.

Untouchable.

Or at least…

That was what he thought.

Because above the ballroom entrance…

The security camera was still recording.
