Chapter 6: The Daughter Who Forgave

Months passed.
Sophie returned to school.
At first, she was quiet.
She stopped wearing her favorite jacket.
The same jacket Preston had searched.
The same jacket that became part of his lie.
One afternoon, she asked me:
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“Do you hate Uncle Preston?”
I looked at her.
I wanted to say yes.
But I didn’t.
“No.”
She looked surprised.
“I don’t hate him.”
“Then why did he hurt us?”
I held her hand.
“Because some people spend so much time pretending they are perfect…”
“They forget how to be kind.”
Sophie thought for a moment.
Then she smiled.
“I’m glad the camera saw the truth.”

I smiled back.
“Me too.”
