Chapter 5: Preston’s Last Attack

Preston refused to accept defeat.
He came to my apartment late one night.
“You ruined my life.”
I stepped between him and Sophie’s bedroom.
“No.”
I looked directly at him.
“You ruined your own life.”
His face changed.
The same anger from the wedding returned.
But this time…
Nobody was watching.
Nobody was protecting him.
“You think you’re better than me now?”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“I think my daughter deserves better than you.”
For a moment, he looked almost lost.
Then he whispered:
“You were always jealous.”
I stared at him.
And finally understood.
Preston didn’t hate me because I challenged him.
He hated me because I was the only person who saw him clearly.
