Chapter 2: The Footage Nobody Wanted to See

Three hours later, I sat beside Sophie’s hospital bed.

The doctor said she was lucky.

The injury wasn’t life-threatening.

But the emotional damage was harder to measure.

“She keeps apologizing,” the doctor told me quietly.

“Children sometimes blame themselves when adults accuse them.”

My heart broke.

My eight-year-old daughter thought she had done something wrong.

Because my own brother made her feel guilty.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

“You need to see what happened before your daughter fell.”

Attached was a video.

My hands started shaking.

I pressed play.

The footage showed the ballroom from above.

A perfect angle.

Everyone could be seen.

Including Preston.

Including Sophie.

Including the truth.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then I saw it.

Preston walking behind our table.

His phone already in his hand.

Looking around.

Waiting.

Then while Sophie was distracted by the wedding decorations…

He slipped the phone into her jacket pocket.

I stopped breathing.

The man who accused my daughter…

Had planted the evidence himself.

I watched the video again.

Then again.

Each time, my anger grew.

But beneath the anger was something else.

Disappointment.

Because my parents had not only failed me.

They had failed Sophie.

I saved the video.

Then I made one phone call.

To the hotel manager.

“I need every security recording from tonight.”

There was silence.

“Why?”

I looked at my daughter sleeping peacefully.

“Because my brother destroyed my child’s reputation.”

May you like

I paused.

“And I’m going to destroy the lie he built his life on.”
