Emily felt the cold metal tip of the needle press against her skin.

Panic raged like a roaring fire inside her trapped mind.

She pictured her life, her stolen home, and the villain standing over her with a victorious smile.

No, she screamed mentally with everything she possessed.

With an agonizing effort that felt like tearing her own soul apart, her right foot twitched.

Her leather shoe kicked outward by a fraction of an inch.

It struck the iron leg of the heavy medical tray beside her chair.

The metal tray wobbled violently.

The dark blue tray tipped over, crashing onto the concrete floor with a deafening rattle.

The glass syringe shattered into a thousand jagged pieces, spilling the deadly amber liquid across the room.

Dr. Vance jumped backward, cursing loudly as the chemical splashed onto his shoes.

"You clumsy fool!" Arthur roared, turning on the doctor with sudden, violent fury.

"What did you do?!"

"It wasn't me!" Dr. Vance stammered, pointing a trembling finger at Emily.

"She moved her leg!"

"She kicked the stand!"

Arthur stared at Emily's limp feet in absolute disbelief.

"That's impossible," Arthur growled, stepping closer to her face.

"The paralytic dose was enough to freeze an elephant!"

"Her adrenaline must be fighting the compound!" Dr. Vance yelled, wiping sweat from his forehead.

"The nervous system is unpredictable under high stress!"

Arthur grabbed Emily by her hair, pulling her head back violently to force her to look into his eyes.

"You think you're clever, don't you?" Arthur snarled into her pale face.

"You think a broken bottle will save you?"

"I have a dozen more vials in the laboratory upstairs!"

Emily stared straight back at him.

For the first time since the casket opened, her heavy eyelids raised fully.

Her cold, dark eyes burned with pure, unadulterated hatred.

Arthur flinched slightly at the sight of her fierce, unwavering gaze.
