Chapter 15 - Trapped in the Void

Emily fought back frantically, scratching and clawing at the impostor's arms.
The gas mask muffled his cruel laughter as he dragged her inside the dark vault.
"You're coming with me, Emily," his voice echoed through the mask.
"I still need your retinal scan to access the offshore accounts in Switzerland!"
Maria threw herself through the thick grey smoke, guided only by Emily's desperate screams.
She swung her iron wrench blindly into the dark haze.
The heavy iron wrench struck the impostor squarely in the ribs.
He grunted in pain, dropping Emily as he stumbled backward into the deep shadows of the vault.
Maria grabbed Emily's hands and pulled her backward out of the vault entrance.
"Julian, where are you?!" Maria screamed, her eyes burning and watering profusely from the thick gas.
"Over here!" Julian's voice rasped out from near the wall, coughing violently.
"I found the manual override panel!"
"I can open the emergency escape hatch, but someone has to hold the lever down from the inside!"
Emily looked back at the vault door, where the impostor was already rising from the floor, his eyes full of murderous wrath.
"No!" Emily shouted, her voice ringing clear and strong through the siren.
"We aren't running anymore!"
She reached out and slammed the heavy iron vault door shut, trapping the impostor inside his own steel tomb.
The heavy locking bolts engaged with a series of loud, mechanical thuds.
Inside the vault, the impostor began pounding frantically against the reinforced steel door, his muffled roars echoed through the thick metal.
"Let me out!" his voice screamed faintly from inside.
"You're going to die out there, Emily!"
Julian pulled down the heavy override lever, and a section of the brick wall slid open, exposing a metal ladder climbing upward into fresh air.
"Go! Go!" Julian yelled, pushing Maria and Emily toward the ladder.
As they began climbing out of the suffocating cellar, a heavy explosion rocked the mansion above them.

The entire ceiling began to crumble as bright orange flames burst through the floorboards.
The impostor's private security force had arrived, and they were burning the house to the ground to destroy all evidence.
