Chapter 8 — The Backup No One Knew About
Richard did not move.
Martin stared at the black screens.
“You should look more worried.”
Richard slowly closed the laptop.
“You should know me better.”
He turned toward Lena.
“What did your grandfather teach you about people who believe they control the system?”
Lena understood.
“They only control the system they can see.”
Richard nodded.
Before his death, Lena’s grandfather had insisted that every major Ashford property maintain an offline backup.
No cloud access.
No remote connection.
No executive override.
The backup was stored beneath the original hotel in a fireproof archive room.
Martin’s smile disappeared.
Priya removed the remote from his hand.
“You’re under arrest for destruction of evidence and suspected financial fraud.”
Martin looked toward Lena.
“You think you’re brave because your father owns this place?”
“No,” Lena said. “I think you’re afraid because I know where the records are.”
Police escorted Martin out.
Two hours later, Richard, Lena and a forensic accountant opened the archive room.
They found eighteen years of payment records.
North Coast Consulting had received $31 million from Ashford properties.
Most of the money had then been transferred to accounts connected to the Caldwell Foundation.
But one series of transactions was different.
Monthly payments of $25,000 had been sent to a private medical facility outside Boston.
The patient’s name was hidden behind a numeric code.
Priya traced the code.
The patient was Malcolm Caldwell.
Celeste had spent three years paying a private clinic to treat her father.
That was not illegal.
What was hidden in the medical notes was.
Malcolm had repeatedly reported that Celeste was forcing him to sign financial documents while heavily sedated.
The clinic’s lead physician had dismissed the complaints as dementia.
The physician’s name was Dr. Simon Rusk.
Lena recognized it.
He was the same doctor who had signed Malcolm Caldwell’s death certificate.
Richard looked through the final set of payments.
Dr. Rusk had received $600,000 from North Coast two days after Malcolm died.
Then Priya received a call from the hospital.
