Chapter 19 — The Other Caldwell
Malcolm Caldwell had another daughter.
Her name was Anna.
She was born five years before Celeste, while Malcolm was briefly separated from Vivian.
Anna’s mother had raised her quietly in Vermont.
Malcolm supported them financially but never publicly acknowledged the child.
Celeste discovered Anna’s existence when she was twenty-six.
Soon afterward, Anna disappeared.
Her vehicle was found near a river.
No body was recovered.
The police classified it as a probable suicide.
Walter read Malcolm’s hidden note twice.
“He believed Celeste had something to do with it.”
Priya reopened the missing-person case.
Anna Caldwell was not dead.
She lived under the name Anne Mercer in a small town in Oregon.
She had spent thirty years hiding.
When federal agents contacted her, she refused to speak over the phone.
Lena flew to Oregon.
Anne opened the door before Lena knocked.
“You look like Evelyn,” she said.
“You knew my mother?”
“She saved my life.”
Anne explained that Evelyn had discovered Celeste’s plan to have Anna declared dead so Celeste would remain Malcolm’s only legal heir.
Evelyn helped Anna disappear.
In return, Anna gave her copies of Vivian and Celeste’s earliest financial records.
Those records had never been destroyed.
They were stored in a Swiss bank vault.
Anne possessed the real key.
“Why didn’t you expose them?” Lena asked.
“I was afraid.”
“They killed my mother.”
“I know.”
“They killed Malcolm.”
Anne’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
Lena expected anger to rise inside her.
Instead, she felt only exhaustion.
“Your silence helped them.”
Anne nodded.
“I have lived with that every day.”
She agreed to testify.
The Swiss archive contained decades of evidence.
Forgery.
Fraud.
Bribery.
Money laundering.
Payments to corrupt officials.
And a handwritten journal belonging to Vivian.
One entry described Evelyn’s death in detail.
Another described Malcolm’s murder.
A third mentioned Anna.
Celeste wants her gone. I told her not yet. Fear makes people obedient.
The evidence was enough.
But on the morning Anne was scheduled to testify, her hotel room was found empty.
On the bed lay a note.
I’m sorry. I can’t do this.
Security footage showed Anne leaving with a man wearing a federal agent’s jacket.
The man was not a federal agent.
