Chapter 18 — The Cost of Truth

Richard underwent surgery for six hours.

The bullet had passed beneath his collarbone and damaged an artery.

Lena sat outside the operating room wearing her bloodstained uniform.

Walter waited beside her.

“You saved him,” he said.

“I brought the danger to him.”

“The danger was already there.”

Celeste had been arrested two blocks from the theater.

Vivian survived the police gunshot.

For the first time in twenty-three years, mother and daughter sat in separate jail cells.

Neither could protect the other without incriminating herself.

Dr. Rusk testified.

Daniel Voss testified.

Martin Vale testified.

Each one tried to reduce his sentence.

Together, they exposed a network that had stolen more than $140 million from charities, hotels and private trusts.

Richard survived surgery.

When Lena entered his room, his first words were weak.

“You kept the uniform.”

She looked down at it.

The white fabric was stained brown with dried blood.

“I think it’s ruined.”

“It can be cleaned.”

“Some things can’t.”

Richard understood she was not talking about fabric.

He reached for her hand.

“I should have told you about your mother.”

“Yes.”

“I thought silence would protect you.”

“It protected them.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“I know.”

Lena sat beside him.

After a long moment, she said, “I don’t want the company.”

Richard opened his eyes.

“You don’t have to take it.”

“But I want to change it.”

She explained her plan.

The Ashford Group would create an independent accessibility foundation.

Not a publicity project.

Not a gala.

A permanent organization led by disabled people, caregivers and community advocates.

Walter would chair the board.

Richard smiled.

“He’ll hate that.”

“I know.”

“Which is why he’s perfect.”

Then Walter entered the room.

“I heard that.”

For the first time in weeks, all three laughed.

But the relief lasted only seconds.

Priya appeared in the doorway.

She held Malcolm’s old letter.

“There’s another page.”

The ink had been hidden beneath the envelope lining.

On it was the location of the original financial archive.

And a warning:

Celeste is not my only child.
