Chapter 20 — The Final Witness

The false agent was James Caldwell.
Celeste’s brother.
The man who had looked away in the ballroom.
For weeks, James had pretended to cooperate with investigators.
He claimed he knew nothing about the fraud.
In reality, he had spent years hiding his family’s crimes.
Not because he loved Celeste.
Because Celeste had evidence that James had used foundation money to cover gambling debts.
James took Anne to the old Caldwell estate.
Lena recognized the location from a photograph Anne had sent minutes before disappearing.
Police surrounded the property.
James stood in the library with a gun.
Anne sat in a chair near the fireplace.
“I only need the journal,” James said.
“The government already copied it,” Lena told him through the open doorway.
“You’re lying.”
“You know I’m not.”
James looked toward Anne.
“This is your fault. You should have stayed dead.”
Anne’s fear disappeared.
For thirty years, she had hidden from those words.
Now she stood.
“No.”
James pointed the gun at her.
“Sit down.”
“No.”
His hand shook.
Anne took one step forward.
“You are all the same. You call fear loyalty. You call silence family. You destroy anyone who refuses to protect your name.”
“Stop.”
“I spent thirty years afraid of Celeste.”
“Stop!”
“But I’m not afraid of you.”
James pulled the trigger.
The gun clicked.
Empty.
Anne had removed the magazine while he searched her bag.
James stared at the weapon.
Priya entered and forced him to the floor.
For the first time, Anne Caldwell walked out of the family estate through the front door.
She testified the following morning.
Her voice trembled at first.
Then it strengthened.
She told the jury about Celeste.
About Vivian.
About Malcolm.
About Evelyn.
About the millions stolen from people who needed wheelchairs, ramps, medical transportation and safe homes.
Celeste watched her without emotion.
But when prosecutors displayed the photograph of Malcolm and Walter together, something inside her cracked.
“My father hated me,” she said suddenly.
Her attorney grabbed her arm.
“Do not speak.”
Celeste pulled away.
“He was going to give everything to her.”
She pointed at Anne.
“He was going to erase me.”
The prosecutor stood.
“So you erased him first?”
Celeste realized too late what she had admitted.
The courtroom erupted.
The judge ordered silence.
Walter closed his eyes.
May you like
Lena reached for his hand.
The truth had finally spoken in Celeste’s own voice.
