Chapter 11 — Malcolm’s Last Night

Dr. Rusk confessed before sunrise.
Celeste had paid him to keep Malcolm sedated while she moved money from his personal trust into the Caldwell Foundation.
Malcolm had discovered the theft and threatened to expose her.
On the night he died, Celeste ordered Rusk to increase his medication.
Rusk claimed he believed the dose would only make Malcolm sleep longer.
It stopped his heart.
Celeste denied everything.
“My father was dying.”
“He was not dying,” the prosecutor said during her first court appearance. “He was being controlled.”
Celeste’s attorneys argued that Rusk was lying to save himself.
Then Walter revealed something no one expected.
Malcolm had recorded their final conversation.
Walter had hidden the audio file inside the same tracking device found in his wheelchair.
The recording began with Malcolm struggling to breathe.
“Walter... she’s taking everything.”
“Who?”
“Celeste.”
A pause followed.
Then Malcolm whispered:
“If I don’t wake up tomorrow, it wasn’t my illness.”
The courtroom went silent.
Celeste sat perfectly still.
The judge ordered her held without bail on charges related to kidnapping, fraud, attempted evidence destruction and conspiracy.
The murder investigation remained open.
Outside the courthouse, reporters crowded around Lena.
“Are you the hotel heiress who posed as a waitress?”
“Did you know Celeste Caldwell was stealing from your family?”
“Are you planning to take control of the foundation?”
Lena pushed through the cameras.
She hated the word “heiress.”
It turned her into a title.
A story.
Something clean and easy to sell.
At the hospital, Walter was recovering.
When Lena entered his room, he looked at her uniform.
“You’re still wearing it.”
“I haven’t had time to change.”
“No,” Walter said. “I think you kept it on for a reason.”
Lena sat beside him.
“Maybe I don’t want people to forget how this started.”
Walter nodded.
Then he handed her a sealed envelope.
“Malcolm asked me to give you this if Celeste was arrested.”
“My name is on it.”
“He knew who you were.”
Lena opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter and an old photograph.
The photograph showed Malcolm Caldwell standing beside a young Richard Ashford.
Between them was Lena’s mother, Evelyn.
Lena stared at the picture.
Her mother had died when Lena was six.

On the back, Malcolm had written five words:
Evelyn knew where it began.
