Chapter 18 - CONFRONTING THE GENERAL

Thirty minutes later, the Admiral stood inside the secure communications room of the naval medical facility.

The gold hardware token and the silver flash drive were locked into a military mainframe terminal.

Agent Marcus stood beside him, watching rows of decrypted files flood the main monitor screen.

Names, offshore account numbers, weapon shipment manifests, and assassination orders scrolled past rapidly.

At the very top of the hierarchy chart sat the digital signature of General Thomas Sterling.

"It's all here, Admiral," Marcus said softly, staring at the absolute proof of the conspiracy.

"Every operation, including the hit order on your wife six years ago."

"This is enough to put Sterling in front of a military tribunal for the rest of his life."

"A tribunal isn't enough for what he did to my family," the Admiral said, pulling a encrypted satellite phone from his pocket.

He dialed General Sterling's private, direct line at the Pentagon.

The phone rang twice before a deep, authoritative voice answered.

"Sterling," the General said curtly.

"The nursery team failed, Thomas," Admiral Miller said into the receiver.

A heavy silence descended over the line for several seconds.

"Vance..." General Sterling said slowly, his voice losing its formal edge.

"You should have retired six years ago when your wife died."

"You shouldn't have targeted my daughter, Thomas," the Admiral replied, his voice completely calm and lethal.

"I have the fully decrypted master ledger loaded onto the global defense network."

"In less than ten minutes, every intelligence agency on earth will receive the full file."

"You can't do that, Vance," General Sterling's voice finally showed a tremor of desperation.

"It will dismantle the entire command structure!"

"Then let it burn," the Admiral said coldly.

"Look out your office window, General."

General Sterling paused on the line, the sound of movement heard through the speaker.

Outside the General's high-level window at the Pentagon, three heavy naval intelligence transport helicopters descended through the fog.

Armed tactical operators from the Shadow Squadron rapidly rappelled down onto the private balcony.

"Your command ends tonight, Thomas," Admiral Miller declared into the phone.

He ended the call, sliding the phone back into his pocket.

The Admiral turned to look through the glass window toward the recovery room where Rachel and his newborn grandson were resting safely.

For the first time in six long years, the storm outside had finally stopped.
