Chapter 11 - THE TICKING FUSE

Rain poured down in relentless sheets, plastering Rachel’s dark hair against her forehead.

The freezing wind howled through the open iron gates of the estate, carrying the sharp scent of ozone and burning insulation.

The black sedan sat in the middle of the gravel driveway, its hazard lights blinking erratically in the dark.

Inside the front cabin, the red digital display embedded into the center console glowed ominously through the rain-streaked glass.

00:15... 00:14... 00:13...

Agent Marcus dropped to his knees in the mud beside the front passenger door, a heavy tactical blade glinting in his right hand.

"Stand back!" Marcus yelled over the roar of the downpour.

"The secondary wire runs through the door jam!"

"If you cut the primary harness, the secondary relay will trigger the thermite compound immediately!" Admiral Vance Miller shouted, rushing to the driver's side.

The Admiral raised the heavy butt of his sidearm and smashed it violent into the reinforced driver-side window.

Spiderweb cracks rippled across the thick glass, but the armored panel held firm.

He struck it a second time with brutal, calculated force.

The glass finally shattered inward, raining tempered cubes into the leather driver’s seat.

Rachel reached the vehicle, her shoes sinking deep into the wet gravel.

"The drive isn't in the glovebox!" Rachel screamed above the storm.

"Ethan always built double-bottom compartments in his vehicles!"

"Check under the passenger frame!" she added, her voice cracking with desperation.

00:09... 00:08... 00:07...

Marcus thrust his arm into the shattered window, feeling beneath the dashboard wiring harness.

Smoke was beginning to roll out from underneath the hood, thick and acrid, smelling of burning sulfur.

"I have the harness!" Marcus yelled, his hands covered in engine grease and rain.

"Which wire do I sever?!"

"Look for the blue naval intelligence tracer line!" the Admiral commanded, leaning through the driver's window.

"Ethan wouldn't know how to wire a custom charge without using standard military surplus components!"

00:05... 00:04...

Rachel leaned over the door frame, her heart pounding in her ears so loudly it drowned out the rain.

Her eyes swept across the tangled web of exposed wires near the floor pedals.

"There!" Rachel pointed with a trembling, muddy finger.

"The copper wire with the white stripe!"

"That's not civilian stock—that's the override link!"

Marcus didn't hesitate for a single microsecond.

He jammed the sharp edge of his tactical blade against the thin striped wire and sliced upward with all his strength.

A bright blue spark flashed inside the dark footwell, blinding them all for a brief second.

The red digital clock froze on the dashboard.

00:02...

A heavy, oppressive silence fell over the driveway, broken only by the rhythmic drumming of rain against the metal roof.

Marcus slumped back against the muddy tires, gasping for air, his chest heaving under his heavy raincoat.

"It stopped," Marcus whispered, his voice hoarse from adrenaline.

"The timer stopped."

The Admiral reached deep beneath the center console, feeling along the hidden structural steel seam.

His fingers caught the edge of a small, cold metallic object locked into a magnetic housing.

With a firm, downward yank, he pulled the object free.

He stepped back into the open rain, holding a small, silver encrypted flash drive in his palm.

"We have it," Admiral Miller said, his eyes burning with stern triumph.

"This is the master ledger."

Rachel leaned against the side of the car, clutching her stomach as a sharp wave of pain shot through her lower back.

She gasped softly, staggering backward into the mud.

"Rachel!" the Admiral caught her before her knees could hit the ground.

May you like

"Dad..." Rachel whimpered, clutching her father's white sleeve tightly.

"Something's wrong..."
