Chapter 8 - A Mother's Ghost

The tension in the grand foyer was so thick it suffocated the air. Down below, Maya held Leo firmly against her ribs, her gun hand steady despite the tremors of adrenaline surging through her muscles. Up on the mezzanine landing, Julian stood beneath the crystal chandelier, his eyes gleaming with the manic desperation of a cornered predator. Victoria stood beside him, clutching her silk robe around her throat, looking down at Maya with pure aristocratic disdain.
"You're a parasite, Maya," Victoria spat, her voice carrying across the cavernous room. "You come from nothing, you mean nothing, and you will die like nothing. Put the boy down. He is Callahan blood. He belongs to the legacy."
"Your legacy is poison and corpses, Victoria!" Maya yelled back, stepping back half a pace to shield Leo behind a fluted marble column. "I saw the medical records in the sub-basement. I saw Clara's autopsy report!"
At the mention of Clara's nameâLeo's deceased motherâJulian's expression twisted into an ugly snarl. "Shut your mouth!"
"She didn't die in an accidental car crash, did she, Julian?" Maya's voice cut through the silence like a scalpel. Leo stiffened against her leg, looking up with wide, horrified eyes. "She found out you were using the Callahan Foundation to run unsanctioned clinical trials on terminally ill orphans. When she threatened to go to the federal authorities, you cut her brake lines on Old Mill Road."
"Lies!" Victoria screeched. "How dare you speak of my late daughter-in-law with your filthy gutter tongue!"
"It's not a lie," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the shadowed archway of the library.
Marcus Vance stepped into the foyer, his shotgun leveled at the mercenaries on the landing. But he wasn't alone. Stumbling ahead of him, hands raised in the air and a bloody towel pressed to his broken nose, was Dr. Robert Vance.
"Robert?" Victoria gasped, her face draining of color. "What are you doing? Tell the guards to shoot them!"
"It's over, Victoria," Dr. Vance choked out, trembling so violently his knees buckled. "Marcus has the physical ledgers from my private safe. The DEA already has the batch logs for Compound-9. Julian forced me... he threatened my children..."
"You coward!" Julian roared. Without a second thought, Julian turned his weapon on Dr. Vance and pulled the trigger.
Crack!
The gunshot was thunderous. Dr. Vance collapsed onto the marble floor with a sickening thud, a crimson stain spreading rapidly across his white shirt.
"Kill them all!" Julian screamed at his mercenaries. "Wipe the whole room!"
The foyer erupted into an inferno of gunfire. Heavy-caliber rounds chewed through the antique wainscoting and shattered mirrors into a million shimmering shards. Marcus returned fire, dropping two guards instantly, while Maya grabbed Leo by the collar and hauled him behind the solid mahogany library doors just as a volley of bullets splintered the oak frame.
"Maya, the back way!" Marcus yelled over the deafening barrage, reloading his shotgun with swift, combat-tested precision. "The kitchen service tunnel leads straight out to the boathouse on the lake! Go, now!"
"Not without you, Marcus!"

"I'll buy you sixty seconds! Get that micro-SD card to Federal Marshal Reynolds at the marina!" Marcus turned and leaned around the doorframe, firing two rapid slugs that forced Julian's surviving guards to scramble for cover. "Run!"
Maya took Leo's hand and sprinted down the dark, narrow servant corridor. But behind them, the heavy footfalls of tactical boots were already closing in, accompanied by the cold, metallic sound of a fresh magazine clicking into place.
