Chapter 13 - The Raid

Dawn broke over the Hudson Valley in cold, slate-gray light.

At the Callahan estate, the illusion of untouchable wealth had completely dissolved.

Victoria Callahan sat in the grand parlor, wrapped in a sable fur coat, her hands shaking as she swallowed three anti-anxiety pills with cold champagne. Outside, Julian stood by the broken front portico, screaming into his encrypted satellite phone at his foreign bank liaisons.

"I need the private jet prepped at Teterboro in forty minutes!" Julian roared. "Transfer all liquid assets from the Cayman accounts to Zurich! I don't care about the penalty fees, do it now!"

Before the broker on the line could reply, the morning air was split by the roar of eight armored federal assault vehicles crashing through the estate's heavy wrought-iron gates.

Tires screeched as federal agents in full tactical gear poured across the manicured lawns. A tactical helicopter circled overhead, its loudspeaker booming:

"Julian Callahan! Victoria Callahan! This is the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Marshals Service! You are surrounded! Drop all weapons and step out with your hands above your head!"

Julian's phone slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the marble steps. "No... this is impossible. We burned her quarters... we destroyed every drive..."

Victoria stumbled out of the front entrance, her face pale as a sheet. "Julian, call the Attorney General! Call him right now!"

"The Attorney General signed your arrest warrants forty minutes ago, Mrs. Callahan," a calm voice rang out.

Maya stepped through the ranks of federal agents, flanked by Marshal Reynolds and two dozen armed tactical officers. She wore a clean dark jacket, her wounds dressed, standing tall and unshakeable in the center of the courtyard.

Julian looked at her, his eyes wild with unhinged rage. "You... you gutter rat! You destroyed my family! I built an empire that could have changed the world!"

"You didn't build an empire, Julian," Maya said, her voice cutting through the morning breeze with absolute authority. "You built a torture chamber for profit. And today, the bill comes due."

"Get down on your knees! Hands behind your head! Both of you, now!" Marshal Reynolds commanded, leveling his sidearm.

Julian looked toward his private guards, but every single one of his mercenaries had already dropped their weapons and knelt on the grass with hands interlaced behind their heads.

Victoria began to wail hysterically as two female federal agents pushed her against the hood of her own Rolls-Royce, clicking heavy steel cuffs around her manicured wrists.

Julian tried to bolt toward the side garden, but Marcus Vance stepped out from behind a tactical van, blocking his path. Marcus drove his uninjured right fist straight into Julian's jaw, knocking him flat onto the cold gravel.

Maya walked over and stood above Julian as an agent knelt on his back, pinning his arms behind him.

Julian looked up through swollen eyes, spitting blood into the dirt. "You think you won, Maya? You have nothing. You'll always be a nobody."

Maya smiled—a calm, peaceful smile that reached all the way to her eyes. "I saved a child, Julian. That makes me richer than you will ever be."
