Chapter 10 - The Lake of Shadows

Julian coughed violently, firing three blind shots into the smoke. The bullets ricocheted wildly off the curved concrete walls with piercing screeches.

Maya didn't waste a heartbeat. She grabbed the rusted iron lever of the storm drain, wedged the barrel of her empty pistol into the hinge as a crowbar, and threw her entire body weight against it.

With a sickening crunch of oxidized metal, the bolts sheared off. The heavy iron grate swung open into the rain-lashed night.

Maya pulled Leo through the opening, tumbling out onto the muddy banks of Blackwood Lake.

The wind shrieked across the dark water, whipping whitecaps against the wooden docks. Down at the end of the private marina, the twin outboards of Marcus's backup speedboat were already idling, its navigational lights glowing faint red and green in the gloom.

"Maya!" a voice shouted from the dock.

It was Marcus. He was clutching his left shoulder, dark blood soaking through his jacket, but he was on his feet, holding the mooring line.

"Marcus! You made it!" Maya shouted, carrying Leo down the slick wooden planks.

"Barely," Marcus grimaced, helping her hoist Leo onto the passenger bench under the canvas canopy. "Julian's private security team has blocked the main road. The lake is our only way out. Marshal Reynolds is waiting at the state park boat ramp on the eastern shore with two tactical teams."

Maya jumped down into the hull, securing Leo with a heavy life vest. "He needs an ambulance now. His liver is failing from the compound."

"Ten minutes across the water," Marcus said, leaping behind the wheel and slamming the throttle forward.

The twin 300-horsepower engines roared to life, digging into the black water and launching the boat forward at blinding speed. The spray lashed against Maya's face as the Callahan estate receded into the distance—a massive, glowing silhouette of malice fading behind the rain.

Leo rested his head on Maya's lap, his small hand curling into hers. "Are we safe now, Maya?"

Maya smoothed his wet hair back from his forehead, leaning down to kiss his cheek. "Almost, sweetie. Almost."

Then, a deafening mechanical thrum shook the night sky above them.

A blinding searchlight beam sliced through the clouds from above, pinning their boat in a circle of harsh, white light.

Hovering fifty feet above the water was the Callahan family's twin-turbine luxury helicopter, its side doors slid open to reveal two private snipers with infrared thermal scopes locked onto the cockpit.
