Chapter 12 - The Eastern Shore

The silence that followed the crash was deafening, broken only by the steady hum of the boat's remaining engine and the rhythmic slap of waves against the hull.
Marcus eased the throttle back, navigating through the final channel toward the eastern shore of the lake.
Ahead, blue and red emergency beacons painted the tall pine trees of the state park boat ramp in flashing light. Half a dozen tactical law enforcement vehicles, along with two advanced life-support ambulances, stood waiting on the asphalt with their engines idling.
As Marcus brought the boat alongside the concrete pier, a dozen heavily armed federal marshals and DEA agents moved forward, weapons drawn in tactical formation.
"Hold your fire!" Marcus yelled, raising his blood-stained hands while remaining visible. "I am Marcus Vance, badge 4812, Special Investigations! Civilian and child on board! We need immediate medical triage for the boy!"
The tactical commander, a burly man with graying hair and a steel-jawed expression, signaled his team to lower their weapons. "Stand down! Medics, move in!"
Two paramedics sprinted down the dock with a stretcher and trauma kits. Maya lifted Leo into the arms of the lead medic.
"He's been dosed with an unapproved organophosphate compound labeled CP-09," Maya said rapidly, reciting Dr. Vance's lab notes from memory. "His liver enzymes are critical, and he's experiencing early respiratory arrest. You need high-dose atropine and pralidoxime immediately."
The medic stared at her in shock, then nodded fiercely. "Got it. Let's move! On three, lift!"
Leo reached out from the gurney, his small, pale fingers catching the edge of Maya's sleeve. "Maya... don't leave me..."
Maya walked alongside the gurney, holding his hand until they reached the back of the ambulance. "I'm right behind you, Leo. You're safe now. The monsters can't touch you ever again."
As the ambulance doors closed and the sirens wailed into the night, Federal Marshal Thomas Reynolds stepped up beside Maya, his eyes scanning her torn clothes, bruised face, and bloody knuckles.
"You must be Maya Lin," Reynolds said, offering her a foil thermal blanket. "Marcus told me everything over the satellite feed. But without tangible physical evidence linking Julian and Victoria directly to the distribution pipeline, their high-priced legal team will post bail before the sun comes up."
Maya wrapped the thermal blanket around her shoulders and reached inside her jacket. She pulled out the heavy bronze music box.
"They won't be posting bail, Marshal," Maya said.
She turned the music box upside down, pressed the hidden brass release mechanism, and let the sealed micro-SD card drop directly into Reynolds's open palm.

"Every transaction. Every victim. Every signature. It's all there."
Reynolds looked down at the tiny chip, then met Maya's fierce, unyielding gaze. "Then let's go end this dynasty."
