Chapter 7 - WHAT DANIEL DID

Daniel was twenty years old when my mother died.

Not a child.

Not innocent.

Not the charming stranger I met years later.

He had been there.

Michael survived surgery.

When he woke the next morning, Agent Reed recorded his statement.

Charles had ordered Rebecca Bennett frightened into revealing the ledger’s location.

Daniel drove the car.

Michael rode with him.

They forced my mother off the road.

They claimed they never intended for her car to go over the bridge.

I didn’t care.

Intent didn’t bring her back.

Michael cried while telling me.

I felt nothing for him.

“You had twenty years.”

He looked away.

“I know.”

“You watched your family destroy mine.”

“Yes.”

“And then you watched your brother marry me.”

“I tried to stop him.”

“Not hard enough.”

“No.”

At least he didn’t argue.

Charles Whitmore was arrested that afternoon.

Margaret followed on obstruction and conspiracy charges.

Daniel remained missing.

Divers searched Blackwater Point.

No body.

I knew what that meant.

He was alive.

Three days passed.

Then five.

My bruises began fading.

For the first time in years, I slept without locking the bedroom door.

Evelyn stayed with Dad and me at a secure property.

Slowly, she told me about my mother.

Funny stories.

Small stories.

The things crime reports never preserved.

Mom hated raisins.

She sang badly in the car.

She once punched a vending machine because it stole my father’s dollar.

Dad laughed for the first time in days.

“She broke her thumb.”

Evelyn smiled.

“She told everyone she fell.”

Dad looked at me.

“Apparently lying about injuries runs in the family.”

For a second, we all laughed.

Then I cried.

Healing was strange that way.

Sometimes it arrived disguised as grief.

On the sixth night, the power went out.

Dad stood immediately.

“Stay here.”

Evelyn froze.

The backup generator should have started.

It didn’t.

Dad reached for the emergency flashlight.

Then we heard glass break downstairs.

My blood turned cold.

Dad whispered.

“Closet.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“I’m not hiding again.”

Footsteps moved below us.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Then Daniel’s voice came through the darkness.

“Claire?”

My entire body remembered him before my mind did.

My hands trembled.

My breathing shortened.

“Come downstairs, sweetheart.”

Dad moved toward the hallway.

I grabbed him.

Daniel continued.

“I only want to talk.”

Evelyn whispered.

“He’s not alone.”

Another set of footsteps.

Then a man appeared at the end of the hallway.

Michael.

For one horrifying second, I thought he had betrayed us.

Then he collapsed.

A knife protruded from his shoulder.

Daniel stepped from behind him.

May you like

Gun raised.

“Family reunion.”
