Chapter 10 - MY FATHER’S CONFESSION

Dad didn’t deny it.
That hurt.
We sat in a federal interview room.
He looked twenty years older.
“I followed her.”
“The night she died?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She told me to stay home with you.”
“But?”
“I knew she was scared.”
Dad had followed Mom from a distance.
He saw Daniel’s vehicle.
He saw the pursuit.
Then he lost them in heavy rain.
Minutes later, he found Mom’s car below the bridge.
He climbed down.
She was still alive.
Barely.
Dad reached her.
She gave him one sentence.
“Protect Claire from Charles.”
Then she died in his arms.
My father had carried that memory for twenty years.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“You were fourteen.”
“I’m thirty-four now.”
“I know.”
“You watched me marry into that family.”
His voice broke.
“I didn’t know Charles was your biological father.”
I believed him.
But belief didn’t erase the anger.
I needed distance.
So I left the room.
Evelyn found me outside.
“You’re allowed to love him and still be angry.”
“I don’t know what I’m allowed to feel anymore.”
She nodded.
“Fair.”
Charles’s trial preparation began.
Michael agreed to testify.
Daniel faced attempted murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, assault, and other charges.
Then Margaret requested to speak with me.
I almost refused.
Curiosity won.
She sat behind glass.
Perfect posture.
Perfect hair.
Even in jail, Margaret Whitmore looked like she was hosting a luncheon.
“You look tired.”
I almost laughed.
“You look incarcerated.”
Her mouth tightened.
“I asked you here because Daniel is dangerous.”
“That insight would have been useful seven years ago.”
“You misunderstand.”
She leaned forward.
“Daniel isn’t dangerous because of Charles.”
“He’s dangerous because Charles could never control him.”
A chill moved through me.
Margaret claimed Daniel had done more than anyone knew.
The violence.
The intimidation.
The disappearances.
Some had been Charles’s orders.
Others had been Daniel’s decisions.
Then she told me about a storage facility.
Unit 614.
Daniel kept private records there.
“Why tell me?”
Margaret looked away.
“Because he threatened me too.”
There was something almost satisfying about that.
The monster she had protected had eventually turned toward her.
Federal agents searched Unit 614.
Inside they found photographs.
Hundreds.
Me.
Dad.
Evelyn.
Michael.
My mother’s grave.
There were files on judges.
Police officers.
Former employees.
And twelve women.
All former girlfriends or employees connected to Daniel.
Several had restraining orders.
Two were missing.
Then Agent Reed opened a locked cabinet.
Inside was a photograph taken twenty years earlier.
My mother stood beside her car.
Alive.
May you like
The date stamped on the photograph was impossible.
It had been taken three days after her official death.
