Chapter 5 - THE BROTHERS

Daniel had removed his ankle monitor before anyone could request one.
He abandoned his car near the marina.
Michael’s private jet remained at the airport.
Neither brother had left the country legally.
Agent Reed believed they were still nearby.
I knew Daniel better.
“He won’t run yet.”
Reed looked at me.
“Why?”
“Because he doesn’t think he’s lost.”
Daniel never accepted defeat.
He changed the rules.
He threatened.
He manipulated.
He attacked.
But he never ran until every other option disappeared.
That afternoon, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Claire.”
Daniel.
Agent Reed immediately signaled for the trace.
I kept my voice steady.
“What do you want?”
“My wife.”
“You lost her.”
A pause.
Then he laughed softly.
“Your father is making you brave.”
“No.”
I looked at the bruises on my wrist.
“You did that.”
His breathing changed.
“Listen carefully.”
“No.”
“Claire.”
“I listened to you for seven years.”
My voice shook.
“I’m done.”
I hung up.
Ten seconds later, a text arrived.
A photograph.
My heart stopped.
It showed Evelyn leaving the hotel that morning.
Taken from across the street.
Another message appeared.
SHE WON’T SURVIVE TWICE.
I showed Reed.
He immediately increased security.
Evelyn stared at the photograph.
“They found me.”
Dad shook his head.
“They never stopped looking.”
That night, Evelyn finally told us what happened fourteen years earlier.
She had discovered payments connected to my mother’s death.
Not proof.
Payments.
A police detective.
A tow truck company.
A private security contractor.
All paid within forty-eight hours of Mom’s crash.
Evelyn confronted Charles.
That was her mistake.
Michael and Daniel picked her up that evening.
Michael injected her with a sedative.
Daniel drove.
They placed her in her car near Blackwater Point.
But Evelyn woke before the car reached the water.
She kicked out a rear window.
The vehicle rolled down the embankment.
She escaped underwater.
The Whitmores assumed her body had been swept away.
She disappeared.
Changed her name.
Moved repeatedly.
Then, three months earlier, she contacted Agent Reed.
“Why now?”
I asked.
Evelyn looked at me.
“Because Daniel started searching for the ledger again.”
“How did you know?”
“Michael contacted me.”
Everyone went silent.
“Michael?”
She nodded.
“He wanted out.”
According to Evelyn, Michael had spent years living with guilt.
He drank.
He disappeared overseas.
Then Charles began preparing Daniel to take full control of the family empire.
Michael panicked.
He contacted Evelyn and offered evidence in exchange for protection.
“Where is he now?”
“I don’t know.”
Then my phone buzzed.
Another unknown message.
This time it contained coordinates.
And four words.
COME ALONE OR HE DIES.
Attached was a photograph.
Michael Whitmore sat tied to a chair.
Blood covered his shirt.
Dad looked at me.
“Absolutely not.”
Agent Reed took the phone.
“This could be Daniel.”
Evelyn stared at Michael’s photograph.
Then she noticed something.
“Zoom in.”
Reed enlarged the image.
Behind Michael was a rusted metal sign.
BLACKWATER MARINA.
Evelyn whispered.
“He took him back there.”
Blackwater Point.
May you like
The place where they had tried to kill her fourteen years ago.
And now Daniel was waiting for me there.
