Chapter 4 - BOX 317

Daniel never reached the key.

Dad caught his wrist.

Agent Reed stepped between them.

“That’s enough.”

Daniel shouted.

“That belongs to me!”

I stared at him.

“No.”

For the first time, I felt something stronger than fear.

“It belonged to my mother.”

Daniel looked at me with naked hatred.

And suddenly I understood something important.

My husband had never been afraid of losing me.

He was afraid of losing whatever I possessed.

Agent Reed placed the key inside an evidence bag.

Daniel exploded.

“You can’t take that!”

Reed calmly sealed it.

“Watch me.”

By midnight, the party was over.

Guests disappeared faster than smoke.

The mansion became a crime scene.

I left with Dad.

Not Daniel.

Not Margaret.

Not the Whitmores.

Dad drove.

Evelyn sat in the back seat.

Nobody spoke for ten minutes.

Then I turned toward Dad.

“How much did you know?”

His hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“Not enough.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“I knew your mother believed Charles Whitmore was involved in something criminal.”

“And you let me marry his son?”

“I didn’t know Daniel was Charles Whitmore’s son until you were already serious.”

“You could have told me.”

“I should have.”

I stared through the windshield.

“You absolutely should have.”

Dad nodded.

“I was wrong.”

It was the first honest sentence anyone had given me all night.

We went to a hotel under federal protection.

At six the next morning, Agent Reed arrived.

He had news.

The key belonged to a private bank vault.

Box 317.

Opened under my mother’s maiden name.

Rebecca Ellis.

The bank was still operating.

The box had not been accessed in twenty years.

At eleven, we entered the vault.

I expected money.

Jewelry.

Documents.

Instead, there were three things.

A leather notebook.

A cassette tape.

And a sealed envelope.

The envelope had my name on it.

CLAIRE.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

My darling Claire,

If you are reading this, something happened to me.

I stopped.

Dad put a hand over his mouth.

I continued.

I need you to know that whatever anyone tells you, I did not leave you willingly.

I love you more than anything in this world.

There are dangerous people involved in what I discovered.

Thomas knows part of the truth.

Evelyn Carter knows the rest.

I looked up.

Evelyn began crying.

“She knew you?”

Evelyn nodded.

“She trained me.”

The letter continued.

The ledger contains names and transactions.

But it is not enough.

The tape is the key.

Trust your father.

Trust Evelyn.

And Claire, if a Whitmore ever comes looking for you, understand this:

They are not looking for you.

They are looking for what I left behind.

My knees weakened.

Daniel had found me.

Courted me.

Married me.

Isolated me.

And hurt me.

All because his family believed my mother had left evidence with me.

Agent Reed opened the notebook.

Pages of handwritten transactions filled it.

Millions of dollars.

Bribes.

Shell corporations.

Offshore accounts.

Then we played the cassette.

My mother’s voice filled the small bank room.

I hadn’t heard it since I was fourteen.

I broke.

Dad held me while I cried.

Then another voice appeared on the recording.

Charles Whitmore.

“You should have taken the money, Rebecca.”

Mom answered.

“You should have stayed away from my daughter.”

Charles laughed.

“You think hiding a ledger will protect her?”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

“Somewhere you’ll never find.”

A pause.

Then Charles said:

“If you disappear, eventually your husband will stop looking.”

Mom’s voice became quiet.

“Thomas will never stop.”

Dad bowed his head.

Then we heard another voice.

Young.

Male.

Michael Whitmore.

“Dad.”

Charles answered.

“Wait outside.”

The recording ended.

Agent Reed looked at us.

“That’s enough to reopen Rebecca’s death.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“That recording proves Charles threatened her.”

She pointed at the ledger.

“And this proves financial crimes.”

“But neither proves who killed Rebecca.”

I stared at her.

“You know who did?”

Evelyn looked terrified.

“I know who told me he did.”

“Who?”

Before she could answer, Agent Reed’s phone rang.

He listened.

His face changed.

“What happened?”

He lowered the phone.

“Daniel disappeared.”

My stomach dropped.

May you like

Reed continued.

“And so did Michael.”
