Chapter 8 - MADISON CHOOSES A SIDE

Madison wanted money.
Victor wanted freedom.
They believed they could get both from me.
The Hale trust had been rewritten after Caroline disappeared.
If Caroline was legally declared dead, her share transferred to Eleanor.
But if Caroline had a living biological child, that child retained a claim.
Me.
Victor needed me to sign a waiver.
Madison had offered to convince me.
When that failed, she offered something else.
My death.
Coleman played the warehouse recording twice.
I heard my sister's voice clearly.
"If Emily dies before Caroline is legally confirmed alive, what happens?"
Victor answered calmly.
"That depends on whether she has a will."
Madison smiled.
"She doesn't."
I felt physically sick.
Travis looked at me.
"I'm sorry."
I shook my head.
"Don't."
Madison had spent years humiliating me.
But hearing her discuss my death like a financial opportunity changed something.
There was no sister left to save.
Police moved toward the warehouse.
Victor escaped through a maintenance tunnel.
Madison was arrested.
As officers dragged her away, she screamed my name.
"Emily!"
I didn't respond.
"You did this!"
I finally looked at her.
"No."
"You did."
She spat toward me.
"You've ruined everything."
I stared at the woman who had once shared my childhood bedroom.
"No, Madison."
"You just finally ran out of people willing to protect you from consequences."
She screamed until the patrol car door closed.
Victor disappeared.
But he made one mistake.
He left the trust documents behind.
Inside was something nobody expected.
A recent signature.
Caroline Hale.
Dated three months earlier.
My mother was alive.
And she had signed away her entire inheritance.
Why?
Coleman brought in a handwriting expert.
The signature was genuine.
Then Eleanor's attorney found a hidden clause.
Caroline's inheritance hadn't gone to Victor.
It had gone into a protected trust.
Beneficiary:
Emily Caroline Hale.
Me.
The amount was staggering.
Money.
Property.
Company shares.
More than I could understand.
I stared at the numbers.
Then pushed the folder away.
"I don't want it."
Eleanor looked at me.
"It belongs to you."
"I want my mother."
Her face softened.
"So do I."
That evening, another package arrived.
No return address.
Inside was a small cassette tape.
The label read:
FOR EMILY.
We found an old recorder.
I pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a woman's voice.
Caroline.
"If you're hearing this, sweetheart, then I failed to come home."
My eyes filled instantly.
"I need you to understand something."
"I didn't leave because I didn't love you."
"I left because everyone who tried to protect you started disappearing."
A pause.
Then she said:
"Rose was the bravest person I ever knew."
"Richard was not."
"But he did one good thing."
"He kept you hidden."
Another pause.
"Victor will tell you this is about money."
"It isn't."
"The money is only leverage."
"The real secret is in the old Hale Foundation building."
"Room 417."
Then Caroline's voice changed.
Fear entered it.
"If Victor finds what's inside that room before you do..."
Static crackled.
May you like
"...he won't just destroy our family."
"He'll destroy hundreds of lives."
