Chapter 12 - THE SHOT IN THE GARDEN

The gunshot echoed across the estate.

Richard fell.

Caroline screamed.

Police opened fire toward Victor's position.

He ducked behind the mausoleum wall.

Linda ran.

Madison charged at me.

She swung the wrench.

I moved.

The metal missed my head by inches.

She swung again.

I grabbed her wrist.

For years, Madison had believed I was weak.

Because I was quiet.

Because I avoided fights.

Because I apologized.

She had mistaken restraint for weakness.

I drove my shoulder into her chest.

We hit the grass.

The wrench fell.

Madison clawed at my face.

"You ruined my life!"

"No."

I shoved her away.

"You did that yourself."

She reached for the wrench.

Caroline kicked it away.

Madison stared at her.

Caroline stared back.

"You touch my daughter again..."

Her voice was terrifyingly calm.

"...and you'll regret surviving tonight."

Madison froze.

Police tackled her seconds later.

Across the garden, Linda ran toward the trees.

Travis intercepted her.

She tried to hit him with a stone.

He caught her arm.

Officers arrested her.

Victor remained inside the mausoleum.

Eleanor walked toward the entrance.

Coleman shouted.

"Mrs. Hale, stop!"

Eleanor didn't.

"Victor!"

Her brother appeared.

Gun raised.

"You destroyed this family."

Victor laughed.

"No."

"I saved it."

"By stealing from children?"

"By building an empire."

"You kidnapped Caroline."

"Because she was going to destroy everything."

Eleanor's face crumpled.

"She was my daughter."

"And I was your brother."

Victor's voice rose.

"But you always chose her."

Caroline stepped beside Eleanor.

Victor aimed at her.

I saw his finger tighten.

Travis saw it too.

He tackled Caroline.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck stone.

Coleman fired.

Victor dropped the weapon.

He collapsed against the mausoleum wall.

Alive.

Wounded.

Finished.

Police dragged him away.

I ran toward Richard.

He had been shot in the shoulder.

Not fatal.

He looked at me as paramedics worked.

"Emily."

I stopped.

"I'm sorry."

I stared at him.

There were too many things inside those two words.

Too many years.

"You should be."

His eyes filled.

I walked away.

Not every apology deserves forgiveness.

And not every ending requires reconciliation.

By sunrise, Victor Hale was under armed guard.

Linda was charged.

Madison was back in custody.

Richard faced charges of his own.

The ledger was recovered.

It contained thirty years of crimes.

But one final page created another problem.

There was another name beside Victor's.

A name nobody expected.

Daniel Cole.

Travis's father.

Travis stared at it.

And whispered:

"My father wasn't helping Victor."

Caroline looked at the page.

Then her face changed.

"No."

"What?"

She pointed at the numbers beside Daniel's name.

"These aren't payments."

"They're account transfers."

Travis frowned.

"What's the difference?"

Caroline looked at him.

"Your father was stealing Victor's money."

"Why?"

She turned the page.

And there was the answer.

Every dollar Daniel had taken had been transferred into trusts for the children Victor exploited.

May you like

Daniel Cole hadn't betrayed them.

He had spent years quietly paying the victims back.
