Chapter 11 - THE MOTHER WHO SOLD ME TWICE

Linda wasn't Victor's prisoner.
Security footage proved it.
She entered his car willingly.
She gave him the estate access code.
She helped him bypass the east gate.
When Coleman confronted Richard, he finally admitted the rest.
Linda had known Victor for years.
Long before she married Richard.
Victor had paid her to monitor him after Caroline disappeared.
My childhood had been built inside an arrangement between criminals.
Linda married Richard partly because Victor wanted someone close to him.
Then Richard brought me home.
Linda recognized immediately who I was.
She kept me anyway.
Not because she loved me.
Because Victor told her to.
I felt numb.
"He wanted to know where Caroline's child was."
Richard nodded.
"Linda reported everything."
"Everything?"
"School."
"Friends."
"Rose's visits."
"Your job."
My stomach twisted.
Victor hadn't suddenly discovered me.
He had watched me grow up.
The humiliation.
The isolation.
The constant effort to make me feel weak.
Maybe some of it had been cruelty.
But some of it had been control.
A confident Emily might ask questions.
A broken Emily wouldn't.
Except they had failed.
I became a social worker.
I learned how abusers controlled victims.
I learned how manipulation worked.
I learned how people buried truth beneath shame.
Without realizing it, my career had trained me for my own family.
Police surrounded the Hale estate.
Caroline insisted on coming.
So did I.
The mausoleum stood beyond the gardens.
Its door was open.
Inside, Victor held a gun.
Linda stood beside him.
The ledger was on the stone floor.
Eleanor stepped forward.
"Victor."
He smiled.
"Big sister."
"Put the gun down."
"You always did like giving orders."
Caroline appeared beside her.
Victor's smile vanished.
"There you are."
Linda looked at Caroline.
Then at me.
Her expression was almost resentful.
"You should have stayed gone."
I stared at the woman I'd called Mom for twenty-eight years.
"Did you ever love me?"
She looked surprised by the question.
Then annoyed.
"Emily, this isn't the time."
"It is for me."
She sighed.
"I fed you."
"I clothed you."
"I gave you a home."
"That's not what I asked."
Linda looked away.
That was my answer.
Victor laughed.
"Sentimental nonsense."
Then Madison stepped out from behind the mausoleum.
She had escaped custody during a hospital transfer earlier that afternoon.
She held the wrench.
The same wrench.
My blood was still dried along the metal.
She smiled at me.
"Remember this?"
Caroline moved in front of me.
Madison laughed.
"Oh, look."
"Your real mommy finally showed up."
"Twenty-eight years late."
She raised the wrench.
Victor aimed the gun.
And then Richard walked into the garden.
Victor's face changed.
Richard stared at him.
May you like
"You've taken enough."
Victor fired.
