Chapter 10 - MY MOTHER CAME BACK

"Mom!"

The word left my mouth before I could think.

Caroline disappeared behind flames.

I tried to reach her.

Travis grabbed me.

"You'll die!"

"Let me go!"

Coleman found another exit.

We broke through a maintenance door.

Firefighters reached Caroline from the opposite hallway.

Twenty-eight years after she disappeared, my mother was carried from a burning building into daylight.

Alive.

I rode with her to the hospital.

She remained conscious.

Her hand found mine inside the ambulance.

She stared at my bruised face.

"What happened?"

I almost laughed.

"Long story."

Her fingers tightened around mine.

"Richard?"

"Partly."

Her eyes closed.

"I should have taken you."

"Why didn't you?"

A tear slid into her hair.

"Because Victor found me every time."

She had spent decades collecting evidence.

Changing names.

Moving between shelters.

Working temporary jobs.

Every time she considered returning, someone connected to her disappeared or was threatened.

Rose.

Daniel.

An investigator.

A journalist.

Victor had built fear around her like a prison.

Then Caroline learned I had become a social worker.

She had watched from a distance.

"You knew what I did?"

She smiled faintly.

"I was proud of you."

Those words destroyed me.

Three simple words.

I had spent my entire life waiting for someone in my family to say them.

My mother had been saying them from the shadows.

"Why now?"

"Because Victor started watching you."

She touched my hand.

"I knew hiding wasn't protecting you anymore."

At the hospital, Eleanor arrived.

Mother and daughter saw each other for the first time in twenty-eight years.

Neither spoke.

Then Eleanor crossed the room.

Caroline stepped backward.

"Don't."

Eleanor stopped.

Pain filled her face.

"Caroline."

"You chose the company."

"I made mistakes."

"You told me to stay quiet."

"I was afraid."

"So was I."

Caroline's voice broke.

"But I was twenty-three years old with a baby."

Eleanor began crying.

"I thought Victor would stop."

"He didn't."

"I know."

"You protected the family name."

Eleanor nodded.

"And I lost my daughter."

Caroline looked at her for a long time.

Forgiveness didn't happen.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

But Caroline allowed Eleanor to sit beside her.

That was enough for one day.

Then Coleman entered.

"Victor has disappeared again."

Caroline looked at her.

"He'll go to the estate."

Eleanor frowned.

"Why?"

"Because that's where the original ledger is."

"What ledger?"

"The one that proves everything."

Caroline sat up.

"And if Victor destroys it, half your case disappears."

Eleanor stood.

"Where is it?"

Caroline looked at her mother.

"In Dad's mausoleum."

Then Eleanor's phone rang.

She answered.

A security guard was shouting.

The Hale estate had been breached.

Victor was already there.

And he wasn't alone.

Linda Bennett was with him.

May you like

My mother.

The woman who raised me had chosen Victor.
