Chapter 8: The Mother Who Stayed Silent

Nathan confronted Laura at the police station.
“You tried to return me?”
Laura nodded.
“You cried constantly. You had a hospital rash. The dates didn’t match. I knew.”
“Then why didn’t you go to the police?”
“I did.”
Nathan stared at her.
Laura explained that she had gone to a local precinct with the fake adoption papers.
Before she could make a formal report, Charles arrived.
He claimed to represent the birth family.
He told police the adoption was private but legitimate.
Then he took Laura outside and threatened her.
“He said I would go to prison for trafficking. He said you would disappear into foster care. He said your biological parents didn’t want you.”
Margaret listened from the doorway.
“And you believed him?”
“No,” Laura whispered. “But I was afraid.”
Nathan laughed once, without humor.
“So everyone was afraid. Charles was afraid. My father was afraid. You were afraid. And I lost twenty years.”
Laura flinched.
“You gained twenty years with me.”
Nathan’s eyes filled.
“That’s what makes this worse.”
He loved her.
That was the wound no one could solve.
Laura had lied.
But she had also stayed awake through fevers, taught him to ride a bicycle, paid for college, and held him after his adoptive father died.
A crime had created a real family.
Nathan could not erase either truth.
Margaret stepped closer.
“I won’t ask you to choose.”
Nathan looked at her.
“You already lost me once.”
“And I will not lose you again by demanding something you cannot give.”
Laura covered her face.
Margaret sat beside her.
For a long moment, the two mothers said nothing.
Then Margaret asked, “Did he have nightmares as a child?”
Laura looked up.
“Every winter. He dreamed about bells.”
Margaret began to cry.
The hospital chapel had rung bells the night Nathan vanished.
He had been only two days old.
Somewhere inside him, the sound had remained.
The DNA results arrived the next morning.
Nathan Reed was Margaret Hayes’s biological son.
He was Emily’s full brother.
There was no doubt.

But a second result shocked everyone.
Thomas Hayes was not Nathan’s biological father.
