Chapter 7: The Crash

Charles collapsed.

Not physically.

Something inside him simply gave way.

He confessed in fragments.

Rachel had copied hospital records.

She had planned to meet a reporter.

Charles followed her that night and begged her to reconsider.

They argued beside her car.

He took the evidence from her bag.

But he swore he had not damaged the brakes.

“I frightened her,” he said. “I threatened to take Sophie away. But I did not kill her.”

Evelyn screamed that he was lying.

Detective Brooks requested the original crash report.

An hour later, a forensic archivist called.

The brakes had not failed.

Rachel’s car had been struck from behind and forced off the road.

The other vehicle was never identified.

Charles stared in disbelief.

“I didn’t know.”

Evelyn’s weapon trembled.

“Then who did it?”

Margaret suddenly remembered Thomas arriving home that night with a deep cut above his eyebrow.

He claimed he had fallen in the garage.

She had believed him.

Charles saw the answer on her face.

“No,” he whispered.

Police searched Thomas’s old insurance records.

His car had undergone major front-end repairs one day after Rachel’s death.

Emily sat down hard.

Her father had not kidnapped Nathan.

But he may have killed Rachel to keep the kidnapping hidden.

Margaret’s grief turned into something colder.

For years, she had mourned Thomas as a complicated man who made mistakes.

Now she wondered whether she had ever known him.

Sophie approached Charles.

“You raised me.”

Charles nodded through tears.

“Did you love me?”

“More than anything.”

“Then why did you hide my mother from me?”

“Because every truth led back to what I had done.”

Sophie stepped away.

“That isn’t love. That’s ownership.”

Detective Brooks arrested Charles for kidnapping conspiracy, falsifying records, obstruction, and accessory after the fact.

Evelyn was arrested for kidnapping, child trafficking, and attempted murder.

As police led her away, she stopped beside Nathan.

“I sold you,” she said.

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

“Why tell me that?”

“Because your mother deserves your forgiveness.”

He looked toward Laura.

The woman who bought him.

The woman who raised him.

Evelyn continued.

“Laura came back three days later. She knew something was wrong. She tried to return you.”

Nathan turned.

Laura began to cry.

May you like

Evelyn smiled bitterly.

“But Charles threatened to send her to prison.”
