Chapter 1: The Wedding That Became a Crime Scene

No one moved.
Three hundred guests stood beneath the cathedral ceiling, staring at Nathan Reed’s exposed chest as if the crescent-shaped birthmark had become a gunshot wound.
Emily’s bouquet lay scattered across the marble.
Nathan looked from Margaret to Charles Whitman, his face drained of color.
“No,” he said.
The word came out quietly.
Then again, louder.
“No.”
Charles clutched the old file against his chest.
“The records match.”
Nathan shook his head violently.
“You have a piece of paper and a birthmark. That doesn’t make me her son.”
Margaret took one unsteady step forward.
“You were born on March seventeenth, 2005.”
Nathan stopped breathing.
Margaret continued through trembling lips.
“You had a mild heart murmur. You hated being wrapped tightly. You had a crescent mark over your heart.”
Nathan stared at her.
Emily covered her mouth.
Those details were not public.
Nathan’s adoptive mother, Laura Reed, had told him he was born on March eighteenth.
She had never mentioned a heart murmur.
Charles opened the file again.
“The hospital report lists March seventeenth. The adoption papers list March eighteenth.”
Nathan’s eyes sharpened.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying someone changed your birthday.”
A frightened murmur spread through the chapel.
Then the rear doors slammed shut.
Two uniformed police officers entered with a detective in a gray suit.
Detective Elena Brooks raised her badge.
“No one leaves until we identify everyone connected to the Reed adoption.”
Nathan turned toward the first pew.
The seat reserved for Laura Reed was empty.
His adoptive mother had been there ten minutes earlier.
Now only her silver handbag remained.
Nathan pushed past the guests and ran toward the side exit.
“Mom!”
Detective Brooks followed him into the corridor.
They reached the parking lot just in time to see a black sedan disappearing through the gates.
Nathan stood motionless in his torn shirt.
Inside Laura’s abandoned handbag, police found a plane ticket.
One-way.
To Lisbon.
Departure time: two hours.

And beneath it was an old photograph of Margaret holding a newborn baby.
Across Margaret’s face, someone had drawn a black X.
