Chapter 13: The Child Victoria Carried

The restored footage was grainy.
But unmistakable.
At 2:14 a.m., Victoria entered the hospital nursery corridor carrying a bundled infant.
At 2:19 a.m., she left without one.
Margaret stared at the screen.
“What baby was that?”
Victoria refused to answer.
Police compared records from that night.
One infant had been admitted without identification after being found outside a church.
A newborn girl.
No parents.
No name.
She disappeared from the system the same night Nathan vanished.
Detective Brooks searched sealed adoption records.
The girl had been placed with a wealthy family in Michigan.
Her current name was Ava Sinclair.
Ava was twenty years old.
DNA testing revealed she was Victoria’s biological daughter.
The family erupted.
Victoria had hidden a pregnancy.
She gave birth privately weeks earlier and abandoned the child.
Then, on the night of Nathan’s kidnapping, she brought Ava back to the hospital, intending to use the confusion to create a legal identity for her.
Charles forged the papers.
Thomas agreed to help because Victoria was protecting his secret.
The kidnapping operation had become a network of exchanged babies, false deaths, and manufactured identities.
Margaret confronted her sister.
“You abandoned your own daughter.”
Victoria’s composure finally shattered.
“I was nineteen.”
“You were twenty-six.”
Victoria looked away.
“The father was married.”
“Who?”
Victoria whispered, “Thomas.”
Emily staggered backward.
Nathan stared at her.
Thomas Hayes had fathered Victoria’s child during his marriage to Margaret.
Victoria’s loyalty had never been sisterly.
It had been love.
She helped punish Margaret because Thomas promised they would eventually be together.
He never kept that promise.
Ava arrived the next day.
She looked like Emily.
Not exactly.
But enough to silence the room.
Ava had grown up loved.
Her adoptive parents had told her she was adopted.
She had never searched because she believed her birth mother had made an impossible but loving choice.
Learning the truth devastated her.
Victoria reached for her.
Ava stepped back.
“You didn’t give me away because you wanted a better life for me.”
Victoria began to cry.
“You gave me away because I was evidence.”
Ava turned to Emily.
Technically, they were half-sisters.
But neither knew what that meant.
Emily took her hand.
“It means you don’t have to face this alone.”
Victoria was arrested for kidnapping conspiracy, falsifying records, obstruction, and child abandonment.
As officers led her away, she looked at Margaret.
May you like
“I loved him.”
Margaret replied, “No. You helped him destroy everyone who loved you.”
