Chapter 5 - Shadows at the Gate

The peace within the fortress was short-lived.

On a rainy Tuesday night in late October, a violent clap of thunder shook the coastal estate. The wind whipped off the Atlantic, slamming heavy sheets of rain against the bulletproof glass of the second-floor library where I sat reviewing financial ledgers.

Suddenly, the red emergency beacon above my desk flashed twice.

The master intercom crackled to life. "Boss, we've got an anomaly on the northern perimeter," Marco’s tense voice came through the speaker. "Two black SUVs just breached the outer perimeter gate. They took out the exterior cameras."

I stood up instantly, pulling the Kimber .45 from the hidden compartment under my desk and racking the slide. "Lock down the house. Move Hannah and Leo to the safe room immediately."

"They're already moving, Boss. But these aren't street thugs. They're using military-grade frequency jammers. It's the Castiglione outfit."

The Castigliones. The final remnants of the crime syndicate that had orchestrated the car bombing that took Sophia’s life. They knew Leo was alive, and they knew that if the Rossi bloodline continued, their empire was doomed.

I sprinted down the east corridor toward the master wing. The nursery door was wide open, the crib empty.

"Hannah!" I called out, keeping my voice low.

From the concealed entrance behind the master bedroom closet, Hannah emerged, pale and trembling, clutching Leo wrapped tightly in a thick wool coat.

"Lorenzo, what's happening?" she whispered, her voice tight with panic. "The alarms..."

"Get inside the vault," I commanded, opening the heavy reinforced steel door hidden behind the false paneling. "There is food, water, and an independent air supply. No bullet in the world can pierce these walls. Do not open this door for anyone except me or Marco."

She grabbed my sleeve, her fingers digging through the fabric of my shirt. "Are you coming inside?"

"No," I said, looking into her terrified eyes. "I have to finish what they started two months ago."

"Please," she choked out, tears spilling over her cheeks. "Don't leave him without a father."

I placed my palm against the side of her face, my thumb brushing away a tear. "Keep him safe, Hannah. That is your only duty. I will handle the rest."

I closed the heavy vault door, the electronic deadbolts locking into place with a series of loud, mechanical thuds.

I turned around, racked my weapon, and walked down the darkened stairs to meet the ghosts of my past.
