Chapter 9 - Three Men in One Photograph

Emily held the photograph so tightly the edge cut into her finger.
Raymond looked twenty years younger.
Charles still had dark hair.
Martin Vale stood between them smiling.
On the back, someone had written:
SAINT CLAIRE CHARITY DINNER – APRIL 18.
Six months before Emily’s mother died.
Emily looked at Raymond.
“You knew Vale too.”
“Yes.”
“You made it sound like he was Charles’s criminal partner.”
“He was.”
“And yours?”
“No.”
Charles laughed.
Raymond ignored him.
“Vale originally approached Saint Claire with a legitimate construction proposal.”
“And?”
“I rejected it after your mother found irregular payments.”
“Were you in business with him before that?”
“Briefly.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Another truth.
Another missing piece.
“I’m tired of discovering my life one photograph at a time.”
Raymond looked devastated.
“I deserve that.”
“Yes.”
She opened her eyes.
“You do.”
Preston stood nearby, silent.
For once, nobody cared what he thought.
Samantha took the ledger.
“We need forensic accountants on this immediately.”
Emily nodded.
“And federal investigators.”
Charles stared at her.
“Think very carefully.”
“I am.”
“You release old allegations, Saint Claire’s reputation collapses with ours.”
“Maybe.”
“Thousands of people work here.”
“I know.”
“Patients depend on this hospital.”
“I know.”
He stepped closer.
“Then don’t destroy it because you’re angry.”
Emily stared at him.
“You all keep mistaking consequences for revenge.”
Charles said nothing.
She continued.
“I didn’t kick a pregnant woman.”
Vanessa looked down.
“I didn’t forge documents.”
Preston flinched.
“I didn’t secretly install unsafe medical equipment.”
Charles’s jaw tightened.
“And I didn’t hide twenty-five years of corruption.”
Emily held the ledger against her chest.
“You did those things.”
She turned toward Samantha.
“Call the federal prosecutor.”
Charles lunged.
It happened fast.
One moment he was standing beside the SUV.
The next, he grabbed for the notebook.
Security tackled him against the vehicle.
Preston shouted, “Dad!”
The briefcase spilled open.
Papers scattered across the concrete.
One envelope slid beneath the wheelchair.
Emily reached down.
Her name was written across the front.
EMILY – AGE 34.
She stared at it.
Charles stopped fighting.
For the first time, genuine fear appeared on his face.
“Give me that.”
Emily looked at him.
“What is it?”
“Nothing.”
She tore it open.
Inside was a typed report.
PRIVATE PATERNITY ANALYSIS.
Emily froze.
Preston stepped closer.
“What?”
She read the names.
Subject A.
Emily Saint Claire.
Subject B.
Raymond Saint Claire.
Probability of biological paternity: 99.98%.
The garage became silent.
Emily looked at Raymond.
He had gone completely pale.
Her voice was barely audible.
“You’re not my uncle.”
Raymond closed his eyes.
Charles smiled.
Emily’s hands began trembling.
“You’re my father.”
Raymond whispered, “Emily.”
She backed away.
“No.”
“Please.”
“You let me believe my father died before I was born.”
“I know.”
“You watched me cry at his grave.”
Raymond’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
“You gave me away?”
“No.”
His answer came instantly.
“Never.”
Emily’s breathing quickened.
“Then explain it.”
Raymond looked at Charles.
Charles smiled wider.
That smile told Emily exactly why he had kept the document.
It was leverage.
Raymond said, “Your mother and I were together before she married Daniel Saint Claire.”
Emily stared.
“Daniel was your brother.”
“My half brother.”
The world seemed to bend around her.
Raymond continued.
“Your mother became pregnant shortly after we separated.”
“Did she know?”
“Yes.”
“Did Daniel know?”
“Yes.”
Emily’s eyes burned.
“And he raised me anyway?”
Raymond nodded.
“He loved you before you were born.”
“Why didn’t you?”
The question broke something in Raymond’s face.
“I did.”
Emily’s voice rose.
“Then why weren’t you my father?”
Before Raymond could answer, Preston’s phone buzzed again.
He looked down.
His face changed.
“What now?” Samantha asked.
Preston showed Emily the screen.
A live video feed filled it.
Martin Vale sat in a dimly lit room.
Behind him was a hospital bed.
A woman lay unconscious under a blanket.
Vanessa screamed.
Because the woman was her younger sister.
Vale leaned toward the camera.
“Midnight is getting close.”
May you like
Then he smiled.
“And this time, I want Emily to bring the money.”
