Chapter 8 - Charles Whitmore

They found Charles in the underground loading garage.
He was standing beside a black SUV.
Not sick.
Not weak.
Not surprised.
Six security officers surrounded him.
Charles looked at Raymond and smiled.
“Dramatic as always.”
Preston stepped toward his father.
“What the hell are you doing?”
Charles ignored him.
His eyes moved to Emily.
“So.”
He gave a small nod.
“You finally found out.”
Emily stopped ten feet away.
She had insisted on coming downstairs in a wheelchair.
Dr. Bennett had objected.
Emily had won.
“What happened to my mother?”
Charles glanced at Raymond.
“You didn’t tell her?”
Raymond said, “Don’t play games.”
Charles chuckled.
“That family talent for silence.”
Emily’s voice sharpened.
“What happened?”
Charles studied her.
“Your mother was stubborn.”
Raymond moved so quickly two security officers stepped forward.
Emily lifted a hand.
“No.”
Raymond stopped.
Emily stared at Charles.
“Keep talking.”
Charles smiled.
“She discovered things she didn’t understand.”
“She was CFO.”
“She understood numbers.”
“And you?”
“I understood survival.”
Preston looked horrified.
“Dad.”
Charles finally glanced at him.
“Don’t look so shocked.”
“You knew Martin Vale back then?”
Charles smiled.
“I introduced him to the hospital system.”
Raymond went pale.
“You?”
“Saint Claire needed construction partners.”
“You brought in a criminal.”
“He became a criminal after the government changed the rules.”
Emily almost laughed.
“Bribery was legal before that?”
Charles’s smile vanished.
She continued.
“Did you have something to do with my mother’s crash?”
“No.”
The answer came too fast.
Raymond heard it too.
“Where were you that night?”
Charles looked at him.
“You questioned me twenty-five years ago.”
“And I’m questioning you again.”
“Then my answer is unchanged.”
Emily noticed the briefcase.
“What’s inside?”
“Private documents.”
“Whose?”
“Mine.”
Samantha stepped forward.
“If they concern hospital assets—”
Charles grabbed the handle.
“They do not.”
Emily looked at security.
“Take it.”
Charles laughed.
“You don’t have authority.”
Raymond said quietly, “She does.”
Charles looked at him.
Raymond continued.
“Emily controls the hospital.”
Charles’s expression shifted.
Only for a second.
But Emily saw it.
He had known she owned shares.
He had not known she could exercise control immediately.
Raymond had intentionally kept that detail from the Whitmores.
Emily finally understood one reason why.
Charles said, “She’s never attended a board meeting.”
“She doesn’t need your permission.”
“I built this hospital.”
Raymond shook his head.
“You nearly bankrupted it.”
Charles turned toward Emily.
“This is what he does.”
“What?”
“He tells you enough truth to make himself look noble.”
Emily looked at Raymond.
Charles continued.
“Ask him why your mother was on Interstate 71 that night.”
Raymond’s face changed.
Emily saw it.
Her heart dropped.
“Uncle Raymond?”
He said nothing.
“Why was she there?”
Charles smiled.
“She was going to meet someone.”
“Who?”
“Raymond.”
Emily turned toward her uncle.
“Is that true?”
He looked sick.
“Yes.”
The loading garage seemed to get colder.
“Why?”
“She called me.”
“What did she say?”
Raymond’s voice became quiet.
“She said she had proof Charles was still working with Vale after the federal investigation began.”
Charles scoffed.
“She had theories.”
“What proof?”
“A ledger.”
Emily looked at the briefcase.
Charles instinctively tightened his grip.
Everyone noticed.
Raymond pointed.
“Take it.”
Security moved.
Charles backed against the SUV.
“You touch this case and my attorneys will bury this hospital.”
Emily almost smiled.
“Which hospital?”
His mouth closed.
Security took the briefcase.
Inside were corporate records, old photographs, banking statements, and a small black notebook.
Raymond stopped breathing when he saw it.
Emily picked it up.
The first pages contained numbers.
Payments.
Dates.
Initials.
Then she reached the final page.
Her mother’s handwriting filled half of it.
IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, FOLLOW C.W. TO M.V.
Emily looked up.
“C.W.”
Charles said nothing.
“Charles Whitmore.”
Silence.
“M.V. is Martin Vale.”
Charles smiled thinly.
“You can’t prove that.”
Emily turned the page.
A photograph slipped out.
It landed on the concrete.
Preston bent down and picked it up.
His face drained completely.
“What?”
Emily took it from him.

The photograph showed Martin Vale standing beside Charles twenty-five years earlier.
And between them stood Raymond.
