Chapter 12 - The Brother Who Never Died

Michael Whitmore was alive.
That fact shattered what remained of Preston’s composure.
“My brother drowned.”
Raymond stared at him.
“Apparently not.”
“I saw the funeral.”
“Did you see his body?”
Preston went silent.
Emily almost laughed at the cruelty of the pattern.
Everyone in this family had a dead person who wasn’t what they seemed.
Rachel opened the recent file.
Michael’s voice filled the room.
“Vale is getting nervous.”
Then Charles answered.
“He should be.”
Emily looked toward security.
Charles had been moved to police custody.
His lawyers were fighting every question.
On the recording, Michael continued.
“Preston is losing control of Emily.”
Charles said, “He never had control of Emily.”
“Then why let him marry her?”
“Because I hoped he would.”
Preston closed his eyes.
Emily stared at him.
Even his father had viewed their marriage as a business strategy.
Michael said, “You should have used me.”
Charles laughed.
“You disappeared.”
“You made me disappear.”
The recording stopped.
Samantha checked the metadata.
“Recorded at Whitmore Estate.”
Preston looked up.
“My father’s house?”
“Three days ago.”
Federal agents searched the property before sunrise.
They found a hidden apartment behind the wine cellar.
Fresh food.
Medication.
Clothing.
Multiple passports.
No Michael.
But they did find a wall covered with photographs.
Emily entering school.
Emily graduating college.
Emily meeting Preston.
Emily’s wedding.
Emily’s pregnancy announcement.
Photos spanning fifteen years.
One showed Raymond leaving Emily’s apartment.
Another showed Anna Saint Claire twenty-five years earlier.
Emily stared at the photographs on the evidence tablet.
“They watched me.”
Raymond’s face tightened.
“Yes.”
“For fifteen years?”
“Maybe longer.”
Preston looked physically ill.
“I didn’t know.”
Emily turned toward him.
“I believe you.”
His eyes lifted hopefully.
She continued.
“That doesn’t make you innocent.”
The hope disappeared.
By morning, federal prosecutors had enough evidence to arrest Charles on financial conspiracy charges.
Vanessa was released pending investigation into the hallway assault.
She returned to Emily’s room voluntarily.
“I want to apologize.”
Emily looked at her.
Vanessa swallowed.
“I believed everything he told me.”
Emily said nothing.
“That doesn’t excuse what I did.”
“No.”
“I was angry at you because it was easier than admitting I didn’t trust him.”
Emily looked at her.
“And you kicked a woman carrying a baby.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“You could have hurt my son.”
“I know.”
Emily’s voice stayed calm.
“You don’t get forgiveness because you feel terrible after cameras prove what you did.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.”
She turned to leave.
Emily stopped her.
“Vanessa.”
She turned.
“Tell the truth.”
“I will.”
“All of it.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I already started.”
Then she placed a phone on Emily’s table.
“Preston gave me this six months ago.”
“What is it?”
“A second phone.”
Emily looked at Preston through the glass wall.
“What’s on it?”
“Messages.”
“With you?”
“With Michael.”
Emily’s heart jumped.
Vanessa continued.
“Preston said Michael was a consultant named Marcus.”
Emily picked up the phone.
There were hundreds of encrypted messages.
One from two weeks earlier caught her attention.
M: IF EMILY FINDS OUT ABOUT THE BABY, MOVE TO PHASE TWO.
P: SHE WON’T.
M: YOU SAID THAT ABOUT THE TRUST.
Emily’s pulse quickened.
She scrolled.
P: WHAT IS PHASE TWO?
The answer chilled her.
M: MAKE HER LOOK UNSTABLE BEFORE THE BOARD VOTE.
Emily looked at Preston.
The next message was from the morning of the assault.
M: VANESSA IS ANGRY ENOUGH. USE IT.
Emily stopped breathing.
Preston had known.
Maybe not about the kick.
But he had known there would be a confrontation.
Then one final message appeared.
Sent forty minutes after the assault.
M: YOU FAILED. I’LL HANDLE EMILY MYSELF.
And attached beneath it was a photograph.
