Chapter 3 - Thirty Seconds Missing

Emily did not want to watch.
She made herself watch anyway.
The footage came from a camera facing the maternity elevators.
There she was.
Walking alone.
One hand beneath her stomach.
Purse over one shoulder.
Then Preston and Vanessa entered the frame from a side corridor.
Vanessa noticed Emily first.
She said something.
There was no audio.
Preston answered.
Emily turned.
Vanessa walked toward her.
The first contact looked almost harmless.
A shoulder bump.
Emily stumbled.
Then Vanessa stepped directly in front of her.
Preston reached for Emily’s wrist.
Emily’s eyes narrowed.
“Pause.”
The security officer stopped the video.
Emily pointed.
“There.”
Raymond leaned closer.
Preston’s hand was clearly wrapped around her wrist.
Emily remembered now.
Not clearly.
Only fragments.
His voice near her ear.
Don’t embarrass me.
Vanessa saying, She should learn.
Then Emily had pulled free.
The footage resumed.
Vanessa kicked her once in the side.
Emily hit the rail.
Then came the second kick.
The one everyone had witnessed.
Raymond’s face became stone.
“That is assault.”
Emily whispered, “He held me.”
Nobody answered because nobody needed to.
The video showed it.
The hospital general counsel arrived fifteen minutes later.
Her name was Samantha Ortiz.
She carried a legal pad and the controlled expression of someone who had already made several difficult phone calls.
“Police are downstairs.”
Preston appeared behind her.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Two security officers blocked the doorway.
Preston lifted both hands.
“I just want to talk to my wife.”
Emily stared at him.
“You denied holding me.”
“I panicked.”
“You called Vanessa kicking me an accident.”
“I was trying to calm things down.”
Raymond stepped between them.
“Leave.”
Preston ignored him.
“Emily, we need five minutes.”
“You had five years.”
His face twitched.
“Don’t do this.”
She almost admired the nerve.
“Do what?”
“Destroy everything over one mistake.”
Emily looked at him for a long time.
Then at Vanessa’s shoe inside the evidence bag.
“One?”
Preston’s eyes flicked toward Raymond.
That tiny movement told her more than his words.
Emily sat straighter.
“What else is there?”
“Nothing.”
“You looked at him.”
“I didn’t.”
“You did.”
Raymond said quietly, “Emily.”
She turned.
His expression had changed.
“Your appointment wasn’t the only reason I was already in the building today.”
A chill moved down her arms.
“Why were you here?”
“The board received a financial alert this morning.”
Preston stepped forward.
“Raymond, don’t.”
Emily looked between them.
“What alert?”
Samantha opened a folder.
“Someone attempted to pledge fourteen percent of the hospital’s development assets as collateral for a private loan.”
Emily frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Raymond answered.
“It means someone tried to borrow three hundred and twenty million dollars against property they do not legally control.”
Emily’s eyes went to Preston.
He said nothing.
“That was you?”
“It was a restructuring proposal.”
“You used my assets?”
“Our assets.”
“No.”
Emily’s voice sharpened for the first time.
“My mother’s trust is not our marital property.”
Preston looked away.
That was answer enough.
Samantha flipped a page.
“The transaction required a trustee authorization code.”
Emily’s skin went cold.
“I never gave one.”
“We know.”
“Then how?”
Nobody answered immediately.
Emily looked at Raymond.
“How did he get it?”
Raymond’s silence told her the truth was worse.
Preston suddenly pushed past one security officer.
“I said I want to speak to my wife.”
Raymond stepped into his path.
“You’re done giving orders in this building.”
Preston’s phone began ringing.
He looked at the screen.
His face drained of color.
Emily noticed.
“Who is it?”
He declined the call.
The phone rang again.
Raymond reached out.
“Answer it.”
Preston’s jaw tightened.
“No.”
Emily stared at the screen.
The caller ID was visible from where she sat.
WHITMORE PRIVATE BANKING.
Then a text appeared.
ACCOUNT FREEZE INITIATED.
Emily looked at Preston.
“What did you do?”
Before he could answer, Samantha placed another document in Emily’s hands.
At the bottom was a digital signature.
EMILY SAINT CLAIRE WHITMORE.
Perfectly forged.
May you like
And beneath it was a date.
Three days before Emily and Preston’s wedding.
