Chapter 20 - THE QUEEN'S CHECKMATE

Sofia spun around, her weapon raised, her mercenaries instantly training their rifles on the dark elevator corridor.

Out of the freezing mist walked Elena.

She wasn't wearing tactical armor.

She wasn't carrying a weapon.

She wore the same immaculate white blazer and black pencil skirt she had worn three days ago in the ballroom.

Her black silk gloves were pulled tight over her hands.

She looked entirely untroubled by the freezing mountain air or the six armed men pointing rifles at her chest.

"Aunt Elena," Sofia said, her voice dropping into a sharp, dangerous tone.

"I must admit, your travel speed is impressive."

"I took the supersonic prototype," Elena said smoothly, stepping into the dim light of the vault entryway.

"I couldn't let my little niece steal the family inheritance without saying goodbye."

Sofia laughed, a bitter, cold sound that echoed off the titanium walls.

"Stop calling me your niece!" Sofia barked.

"I am the daughter of the original Syndicate founders who your father murdered twenty years ago!"

"Arthur Sterling and Marcus were just my pawns!"

"I spent ten years pretending to be Arthur's spoiled, stupid daughter!"

"I let you humiliate me in that diner!"

"I let you slap my face in front of those billionaires!"

"I let you drag me through sewers and trash chutes!"

"All so you would open this vault for me!"

"And now I have everything!"

Sofia pointed her gun straight between Elena’s eyes.

"You have no guards, Elena," Sofia sneered.

"You have no weapons."

"You are alone in a cold mountain vault with six of my best shooters."

"Any last words before I erase you for real?"

Elena slowly raised her gloved hand to her face.

She unbuttoned the small wrist fastener.

With a smooth, deliberate motion, she pulled off the black silk glove.

The Pink Emperor Diamond blazed under the vault spotlights, casting a blinding, hypnotic pink light across the room.

"Just one thing, Sofia," Elena said softly.

"Look at the vault ceiling."

Sofia flicked her eyes upward for a split second.

Attached to the heavy structural beams of the vault ceiling were twelve military-grade thermite charges.

The exact same charges that Sofia had used to try and burn Elena in the archive room three days ago.

The red digital timers were already counting down.

05... 04... 03...

Sofia’s face went completely white.

"You... you rigged your own vault?!" Sofia shrieked in sheer disbelief.

"I rigged the vault the moment I learned you boarded the plane," Elena said with terrifying calm.

"I didn't come here to save the gold, Sofia."

"I came here to bury the monsters."

02... 01...

"NO!" Sofia screamed, raising her gun.

Elena didn't try to dodge.

She pressed a button on her ring's inner band.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The thermite charges ignited simultaneously in a blinding, white-hot eruption of four-thousand-degree fire.

The thick steel ceiling melted instantly, collapsing thousands of tons of solid granite rock down into the vault.

The mercenary unit was instantly crushed beneath the falling mountain.

Sofia screamed as the floor buckled beneath her feet, the mountain swallowing the gold, the bodies, and the legacy of the Vance Syndicate whole.

Elena stepped backward into the secure, blast-proof emergency escape capsule behind the elevator shaft.

The heavy titanium hatch slammed shut, sealing her safely inside as the entire mountain cavern collapsed into dust and white fire.

Six months later.

The Mediterranean sun sparkled across the blue waters of the French Riviera.

A small, quiet diner sat on the edge of a cliffside road, far away from high society, billionaires, and dark Syndicate vaults.

Elena sat at a small wooden table near the window, wearing a simple sundress and dark sunglasses.

She read a newspaper, calmly sipping a cup of black coffee.

On the front page of the international news section, a headline read:

"MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE OF EUROPEAN BANKING DYNASTY: INVESTIGATORS FIND NO TRACE OF MISSING BILLIONS."

Elena turned the page, completely unimpressed.

A young waitress walked over, setting down a fresh plate of warm pastries.

"Is there anything else I can get for you, ma'am?" the waitress asked politely.

Elena looked up, offering a gentle, warm smile.

"No, thank you," Elena said smoothly.

"Everything is perfect."

Elena reached into her small handbag and pulled out a clean hundred-dollar bill to leave as a tip.

As she set the cash on the table, her hand caught the bright sunlight.

Her ring finger was completely bare.

The Pink Emperor Diamond was gone, buried three thousand meters deep under the Alpine snow where no human hand would ever touch it again.

She was no longer a queen.

She was no longer an heiress.

She was finally free.

She picked up her coffee cup, taking a slow sip as she watched the peaceful waves crash against the rocks below.
