Chapter 1 - THE TILE AND THE SHADOW

The marble floor of the grand hall was ice cold beneath Sofia’s knees.
She lay sprawled on the polished surface, her royal blue dress pooling around her like spilled ink.
The sharp sting on her left cheek burned like acid.
Her luxury mascara smeared across her pale face as she looked up.
Standing directly over her was Elena, the humble server she had insulted moments ago.
The high-society guests stopped breathing.
The quiet in the ballroom was total and suffocating.
Champagne glasses hung frozen in mid-air.
Elena slowly raised her right hand into the direct light of the crystal chandelier.
She pinched the tip of her black silk glove.
With a slow, deliberate tug, she peeled the fabric away from her skin.
The glove slithered off her fingers like a shedding snake.
A blinding pink light flared across the ballroom.
Glittering on her ring finger was the Pink Emperor Diamond.
It was a fifty-carat flawless gemstone worth hundreds of millions.
It was the signature seal of the Sovereign Vanguard.
It was the legendary artifact of the silent family that controlled half of Europe's banking cartels.
Sofia’s eyes widened until the corners bled with broken capillaries.
She recognized that ring immediately.
Her father had spent five years begging for a single ten-minute meeting with the person who wore it.
Her breath hitched in her throat.
"You..." Sofia gasped, her voice cracked and trembling.
Elena looked down at her with eyes colder than Arctic sea ice.
"You thought you were a queen because your father bought you a dress," Elena whispered.
Her voice was quiet, but it reverberated through the hall like a thunderclap.
"You don't even own the fabric on your back," Elena added.
Elena stepped forward, her expensive Italian heel landing an inch from Sofia’s nose.
"This estate belongs to my holding firm."
"This party was funded by my offshore account."
"And you just struck the absolute owner of your life."
Sofia tried to scramble backward, but her heavy gown trapped her legs.
The high-society guests began to whisper fiercely.
"Is that... Lady Elena?"
"The hidden heiress of the Vance Syndicate?"
"Oh God, Sofia just assaulted the most dangerous woman in the hemisphere."
Sofia reached out, grabbing the hem of Elena’s black pencil skirt with shaking fingers.
"Please... I didn't know!" Sofia sobbed, her arrogance completely shattered.
"I thought you were just a useless server!"
Elena didn't kick her away.
Instead, she simply looked at the security guards standing near the arched marble entrance.
She raised two fingers.
Four massive men in dark tactical suits stepped out from the shadow of the velvet curtains.
They didn't look like standard private security guards.
They wore subtle military pins on their lapels.
They were former elite mercenaries directly employed by the Vance estate.
"Throw her out," Elena said softly.
"Not to the street."
"To the back alley."
"Strip her of the dress, the jewelry, and the shoes."
"They were leased through my agency anyway."
Sofia screamed as two guards grabbed her under her arms.
They lifted her off the marble floor like a sack of trash.
"No! Father! Call my father!" Sofia shrieked, kicking her legs violently.
Her hair flew into her face, messy and wet with sweat.
The crowd stepped back in horror, refusing to make eye contact with her.
Nobody moved a finger to help her.
"Save me! Julian! Help me!" Sofia screamed toward a young man in the crowd.
Julian, her fiancé, quickly turned his back on her and took a deep gulp of his wine.
He pretended he didn't even know her name.
Sofia’s screams faded down the grand service hallway as the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind her.
Elena calmly slid her black glove back over her hand.
She hid the magnificent pink diamond once again.
She turned to face the room of terrified billionaires.
"Enjoy the evening, ladies and gentlemen," Elena said with a polite, terrifying smile.
"The catering is paid for."
She turned toward the service exit.
As she pushed the door open, her phone buzzed inside her hidden pocket.
She pulled out a black, custom-encrypted device.
A text message blinked on the screen from an unknown number.
“Good performance, little sister. But the ring you're wearing is a fake. The real one is currently in my safe. Welcome to the trap.”
Elena’s heart stopped.

She looked down at her gloved hand.
A dark shadow moved quickly past the stained-glass window at the end of the dark corridor.
