CHAPTER 14 THE ROOM BENEATH BLACKWOOD MANOR

No one spoke.

The blueprint lay across the conference table like a confession.

Marcus traced the hidden level beneath Blackwood Manor with his finger.

"The original mansion ends here."

He tapped a thick concrete wall.

"But this section..."

He slid his finger farther underground.

"...was added twelve years later."

Charles stared at the plans.

"I've lived in that house most of my life."

Marcus looked at him.

"And you never knew?"

Charles slowly shook his head.

"There was never a basement on any architectural drawing."

"There wasn't."

Marcus placed another document beside the blueprint.

"Because every permit related to this addition was classified."

Daniel frowned.

"Classified by whom?"

Marcus answered quietly.

"Richard Blackwood."

Blackwood Manor

An hour later...

A convoy of FBI vehicles rolled through the iron gates.

The mansion stood in complete darkness.

No servants.

No security guards.

No lights.

Only silence.

Daniel stepped out first.

The home where he had grown up suddenly felt unfamiliar.

Almost hostile.

Ava walked beside him.

"You okay?"

He looked at the front door.

"I don't remember the last time this place felt like home."

She slipped her hand into his.

"Then let's make sure no one else ever has to fear it again."

Marcus addressed the tactical team.

"Three entry groups."

"No unnecessary force."

"If Richard Blackwood is alive..."

"...we bring him out alive."

The Portrait

Inside...

Dust covered the grand foyer.

The grandfather clock had stopped at exactly 9:17.

Charles frowned.

"My father always wound that clock."

Marcus noticed something strange.

The massive oil portrait of Richard Blackwood hung slightly crooked.

Only a few degrees.

Enough to attract attention.

Daniel approached it.

"My grandfather hated crooked frames."

He reached up and straightened the portrait.

Click.

Everyone froze.

A low mechanical rumble echoed through the walls.

The fireplace slowly slid sideways.

Revealing a narrow stone staircase disappearing into darkness.

Charles whispered,

"My God..."

Marcus raised his flashlight.

"Nobody touches anything."

Daniel looked down the staircase.

Cold air drifted upward.

It smelled like old paper.

And bleach.

The Archive

The staircase ended beneath the mansion.

A steel vault door stood before them.

Unlike the rest of the estate...

The electronic lock still had power.

Marcus examined it.

"Biometric access."

Charles stepped forward.

"It won't recognize me."

Marcus nodded.

"It only accepts one person."

Daniel looked at the fingerprint scanner.

A faded label remained beside it.

R. BLACKWOOD

Silence.

Then...

The scanner suddenly lit green.

Everyone looked at Daniel.

The vault slowly unlocked.

Charles frowned.

"It accepted you."

Marcus looked from Daniel to the scanner.

"It shouldn't have."

Daniel stared at his own hand.

"I didn't even touch it."

The vault door opened by itself.

Someone...

Had remotely granted them access.

The Wall of Names

The room beyond was enormous.

Rows of climate-controlled cabinets stretched into darkness.

Every shelf held boxes.

Photographs.

Birth certificates.

Medical files.

Children's drawings.

Thousands of documents.

Rachel covered her mouth.

"So many..."

Marcus pulled open the nearest cabinet.

Each drawer contained names.

Not dozens.

Hundreds.

Some files were stamped:

RELOCATED

Others read:

DECEASED

Owen Graves stared in horror.

"My father told me Bluebird protected twelve children."

Marcus slowly counted another cabinet.

"It wasn't twelve."

"It was at least one hundred and forty-three."

Daniel whispered,

"My God..."

Ava picked up a small teddy bear resting beside one file.

Its ear was stitched back together by hand.

Someone had loved this child.

Someone had erased that child's life.

Emily's File

Rachel searched frantically.

"Emily..."

"Emily..."

"There!"

She pulled out a blue folder.

Inside...

A birth certificate.

Original fingerprints.

Infant footprints.

Hospital photographs.

And adoption records.

Rachel's hands trembled.

The adoptive parents' signatures filled the final page.

Tears streamed down her face.

"They loved her."

Ava looked over her shoulder.

The couple in the photographs smiled warmly.

Emily was laughing.

Birthday parties.

School plays.

Camping trips.

Christmas mornings.

Rachel smiled through tears.

"She wasn't abused."

Daniel looked at Ava.

"For thirty-two years..."

"...someone else gave your sister a good life."

Ava nodded slowly.

"And now she deserves the truth."

Richard's Journal

Marcus opened the largest safe in the room.

Inside...

Only one leather-bound journal remained.

The final volume.

Richard Blackwood's personal diary.

The first page read:

History is written by survivors.

Charles felt sick.

Marcus turned another page.

Richard's handwriting remained precise.

Cold.

Controlled.

Weak men inherit companies.

Strong men protect them.

Another page.

Samuel Bennett chose honesty over loyalty.

Honest men become dangerous.

Rachel whispered,

"He never saw Samuel as a person."

Marcus continued.

Another entry.

Victor was useful.

Charles was obedient.

Evelyn was ambitious.

Daniel slowly looked toward his mother.

She closed her eyes.

"I was nothing but another piece on his board."

Marcus turned one more page.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

Daniel immediately noticed.

"What is it?"

Marcus didn't answer.

He silently handed the journal to Ava.

A single sentence had been underlined three times.

Daniel must never learn who opened the vault.

Daniel frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Charles looked confused.

"There wasn't any vault when I lived here."

Marcus examined the next page.

A photograph slipped free.

It landed face-up on the floor.

Everyone stared.

The picture showed a much younger Richard Blackwood...

Standing beside a little boy.

About six years old.

The child was Daniel.

But the man holding Daniel's hand...

Wasn't Charles.

It wasn't Victor.

It wasn't anyone in the family.

Rachel whispered,

"Who is that?"

No one answered.

Because no one recognized him.

Except...

Evelyn.

The color drained from her face.

She staggered backward.

Daniel caught her before she fell.

"Mom?"

She couldn't stop staring at the photograph.

"No..."

Daniel held it closer.

"Do you know him?"

A single tear rolled down Evelyn's cheek.

"I prayed..."

"...you would never see this."

Daniel's heartbeat quickened.

"Who is he?"

Evelyn slowly raised trembling fingers toward the photograph.

"My husband."

Silence.

Charles looked at her in disbelief.

"What?"

She closed her eyes.

"The man who raised Daniel..."

"...was never his father."

Daniel's voice shook.

"You already admitted that."

Evelyn nodded.

"But I lied again."

Daniel felt the room spinning.

"You said you didn't know who my father was."

"I didn't."

"Then who is this?"

Evelyn whispered,

"The man I married."

Charles stepped backward.

"Evelyn..."

She looked at him with tears in her eyes.

"I married him before I ever met you."

The room fell completely silent.

Daniel stared at her.

"What happened to him?"

Evelyn answered in a broken voice.

"He disappeared."

Marcus immediately compared the photograph with the FBI database.

His computer chimed.

MATCH FOUND.

Everyone rushed toward the screen.

The file loaded slowly.

Name:

Michael Carter

Occupation:

Federal investigator.

Status:

Missing for 34 years. Presumed dead.

A second line appeared beneath it.

Last known investigation: Blackwood Industries.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

His voice was barely audible.

"Your father wasn't just investigating Blackwood..."

He turned the screen toward everyone.

"He was investigating Project Bluebird."

Before anyone could process the revelation...

The lights inside the underground archive suddenly shut off.

Emergency generators failed.

The vault door slammed shut behind them.

A distorted voice echoed through hidden speakers.

Old.

Calm.

Familiar.

"Welcome home, Daniel."

Charles slowly closed his eyes.

"No..."

The voice continued.

"I've waited thirty-four years to meet my grandson."

Ava gripped Daniel's hand.

Marcus drew his weapon.

Rachel looked toward the darkness.

Daniel's blood ran cold.

Only one man could possibly know all of this.

Only one man had built the room.

Only one man had called Daniel...

Grandson.

Richard Blackwood.

And he was somewhere inside the archive.
